Has anyone ever painted a fence?

This may be the most boring post on MN tonight but I'm asking the question anyway.

I'm really wanting to paint my garden fence but dh says I can't paint it a different colour because it'll seep through to next doors part of the fence and then we'll have to try and rectify it?

Is this true? Can it be avoided? I know nothing about diy but surely he's wrong or everybody in a street would have to have the same colour fence?

We paint our fence brown, the people at the back have painted their side grey today. A few drips have come through, DP will just go over them with a small brush tomorrow.

Maybe warn them in advance so they can check their side & wipe off any drips?
I keep telling DH we can’t do one of our fences because it’s the neighbours & they are very garden proud, they would not be happy if it dripped through. Our previous house we did our fence & didn’t think anything about it until new neighbours moved in and stained their side a different colour. It dripped through & was very noticeable. I wasn’t overly bothered but some people would be.

Drips do go through. I told my neighbours what I was going to do so they could nip out and wipe the drips before they stained the fence.

The next year I got a sprayer and handed them plastic sheets and clothes pegs to pin up on their side of the fence so their patio wouldn’t get sprayed. I used the sprayer and I it went right through the panels as expected but it was ok because if the sheets and they could wipe off any discolouration on their side as my paint was still wet as they were there at the time.
