Turkey mince recipe ideas please

We've been in total lockdown after having the virus so managed to get a shopping delivery from Morrisons. Beef mince was swapped for turkey thigh mince. No problem, I've just never cooked with it before.

Can you do your normal chilli's and bolognaise? Can you substitute like you would quorn or does it have it's own taste and texture?

Thank you in advance from somebody old enough to know better Grin

We make turkey meatballs in tomato sauce or turkey burgers

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/04/2020 18:03

I do a Thai curry with holy basil (smells aniseed ish). Lovely.

I use it to make turkey burgers. Mix it with grated carrot and courgette and finely chopped red onion. Form the patties around a chunk of mozzarella. I brown them in a frying pan and finish off in the oven.

Turkey meatballs are great, I prefer them to beef mince. I grate carrot and onion in to the mince, as I find that helps to keep them moist.

You can do a lovely chilli with turkey mince - much as a normal chilli really.

Turkey burgers are also good.

Yes, we do meatballs with it too, or burgers. Less greasy than beef

alltimejo · 25/04/2020 18:09

We had a turkey chilli tonight and it was surprisingly tasty, I used this recipe.

okiedokieme · 25/04/2020 18:10

Just add more flavouring than you would with beef and oil to the pan if making meatballs

Elouera · 25/04/2020 18:12

I use turkey mince instead of pork mince in many recipes- mainly Sth East Asian inspired ones. It has a very similar texture, not overly strong flavour (IMO) but depending on the fat content, can be a bit dry sometimes. Some of my favourites:

  • Thai meat balls
  • Thai Larb salad
  • San choy bow (lettuce bowls)
  • Fried rice with mince mixed in
  • Teriyaki turkey bowl

I made a turkey, thyme and leek meatloaf. Easy to make from BBC Food and delicious with potatoes, veg and gravy.

Sandsnake · 25/04/2020 18:13

I made some mince into turkey meatballs the other day. Threw in a decent amount of pesto as a seasoning, which turned out to be inspired.

We use turkey mince for tacos and chilli.

The turkey recipe in the Hairy Dieters recipe book is nice, we have it fairly often .. but we use normal rice not cauliflower...

Wow thank you, so many replies in such a short space of time!

It's a huge pack so I'm thinking of splitting it and trying a few things, luckily dd is very open to trying new flavours and spices (well she eats beef chilli, various curries, home made pasta sauces with olives and anchovies added)

I'll certainly try the hairy bikers chilli - I love them, I won't bother with the cauli rice either Grin

I haven't looked at the package too closely only googled and heard if it's thigh mince it can be quite fatty still, almost on a level with beef mince.

We love meatballs too - that would be a winner, especially adding herbs and spices (and the squishing whilst making them for dd)

@MrsTerryPratchett and @Elouera - whilst I love spice, I just cannot eat anything green curry wise - I don't know what it is about it, it's like coriander - i cannot bear that. I do love chillies and ginger though so I will google your idea Elouera - I just can't put my finger on what it is in green or red curry that I cannot eat.

Tonight, I'm doing a quick broth with stock, chilli and ginger to make a noodle soup with carrots and peppers and bean sprouts.

Anyway I digress, thank you, I shall look at all recipes!
