Superhero films for a 6 year old

My DS is 6. All his friends like and talk about characters like batman and Spiderman. He's showing an interest in them and has asked to watch a film tonight with us.

But I haven't ever seen any super hero films... I've no idea if they are suitable or which ones might be? He's a young 6 and quite easily scared... Any suggestions?

Maybe start him off on Big Hero 6? Great cartoon film - funny, peril, some sad bits (but not heart breaking).

VideographybyLouBloom · 25/04/2020 16:42

The Incredibles?

iklboo · 25/04/2020 16:49

Ooh yes @VideographybyLouBloom - and Incredibles 2 for the Jack Jack scene alone!

The original Superman films with Christopher Reeves and Gene Hackman are brilliant and age appropriate.

mealychump · 25/04/2020 16:55

He doesn't love animated films.... Wasn't keen on the Incredibles. But perhaps big Hero 6 worth a try

Big hero 6 is brilliant.

Ricekrispie22 · 25/04/2020 17:21

Try the Lego Batman film.

My 6 year old is obsessed with marvel.

He’s quite brave (?), so we’ve been allowing some 12a stuff on Disney plus- the wolverine films are his favourites at the moment.

But he was glued to the incredible and big hero 6.

I think Ant man was ok, and Antman and the wasp. Wonder Woman and captain marvel. He’s enjoyed the Ironman and captain America films. Oh, I really enjoyed watching the Thor films with him, especially ragnorok. He found the first thor, with the ice giant thing, a bit scary.

I’d recommend you get Disney plus- free trial for a week. And watch some marvel films yourself, to judge.

My 4 yr old watches all the marvel and dc films and thinks they are brill

mealychump · 25/04/2020 17:33

We have Disney Plus! Thanks :)

My 3 yo loves the Tom Holland Spiderman movies. Homecoming and far from home.

PennyArrowBar · 25/04/2020 18:55

Lego Batman is absolutely brilliant also Grin

If you go on IMDB there is a parental rating type thing that lists what unsuitable material there might be

Whitney101 · 25/04/2020 19:00

Has this screenshot come through OK? You can click through and it tells you more so you might be able to deem how your son would fare. For example in iron man, some of the parental guide references some things which I think may go over a 6 year olds head... “implied” if you like.

The live action films are completely inappropriate for young children.

Disney+ has all the age appropriate animated superhero shows and films, just let him watch those.

TenShortStories · 25/04/2020 19:22

I personally wouldn't go near any of the modern live actions but would second the original Superman with Christopher Reeve. Would The Princess Bride count as superhero? That's OK from an age perspective but not sure if it would cut the mustard as a superhero film.

mealychump · 25/04/2020 19:47

I can't find anything other than animated ones that's not a 12. I think he's probably a bit young for them still... If anything the storyline will go over his head and I'll just have to explain everything 🙄.

I might try him on the animated ones... But not sure he will be interested. He likes Lego but wasn't keen on the Lego movie... He finds it hard to sit for a whole film. Suspected ADHD.

There’s a marvel section on Disney+ which looks like it might have some good stuff albeit not all movies. Hero project?

Ciwirocks · 25/04/2020 20:14

Definitely start with the Lego avengers short films. My dd loves them although he is 8 now and watches all the proper films as well. Lego Batman movie is brilliant as well

KickingItSince1966 · 25/04/2020 22:13

The old Superman films were great. I remember being really young watching one at the cinema. Loved whenever they were shown on TV. And the tv series with Teri Hatcher. We used to record them in the evening for my little brother to watch over and over again. I’d love to watch those with DS.

MrsFionaCharming · 25/04/2020 22:26

The old Batman TV show might be good. I remember it being very campy but not scary, and shorter episodes than a full film.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 25/04/2020 22:29

It’s animated but Spider-Man:Into the Spider-Verse is GREAT, a PG certificate, and my six year old DD loved it.

Figgygal · 25/04/2020 22:29

Big hero 6 is great
Lego Batman

My 8yo has seen avengers assemble it’s pretty tame compared to the others. I’d definitely not let him watch infinity war, endgame or black panther the violence and themes in those seemed much more real than say captain marvel which I think I would let him watch
