Anyone understand why I can't get broadband?

I've always used mobile broadband. Would now like fixed unlimited broadband and rang my provider today. I was told by first agent I'd no "internet connection", the second agent was more helpful and said there was no "infrastructure" in my apartment for it but took my details and said they're hoping to keep rolling out broadband and would be in touch. I live in an apartment and have been here for 20 years. Ihad a landline years ago and so there is a connection for that. I'm not very techie and don't really understand what all this means. Can anyone explain please?

If you last had a landline 20 years ago the wire will be dry, it may not actually go anywhere now and it may not be on any records

Try a different provider. We couldn’t get Virgin in ours but we could get sky.

And who would sort the wire out, is it the broadband company?

Depending on the broadband provider they sort the physical connection themselves or get Openreach to do it ...whatever they sort it out on your behalf

There's different types of broadband, the two main ones are supplied by virgin media, and Openreach (bt, sky, talk talk, Plusnet and pretty much everyone else).

The broadband availablity depends on whether or not the infrastructure (cabling and street cabinet etc) for it has been laid in your area. Unless you live in a "not spot" you should be able to get one of those types, so if you tried one and they said no infrastructure, try the other.
