How much money have you danced in lockdown?

Mauidemigod · 24/04/2020 14:58

I’ve just gone through my banking and realised we’ve saved £1000 but not being able to eat out at restaurants/go for coffees/lunches ect.. Blush

Lucky really as our business is going to shit now on lockdown so need it!

Anyone else realised they spend too much money and have actually saved during lockdown?

No idea what we've saved.

No fuel costs as DH working at home. I'm only shopping once per week. I try and switch cars so they each get a run.

Less food as am cooking and planning better. Don't want to shop too often so have to make use of what we have in.

Spent more on Majestic wine but not going to local bars and restaurants.

Not buying clothes as not going anywhere.

Saving £100 per month on our 3 gym memberships but did buy £600 worth of weights n stuff just prior to lockkdown.

If DH customers keep paying then we're OK. If not, in the shit.

So far so good.

HandfulOfFlowers · 24/04/2020 17:06

I have spent 35% less this month compared with normal. But then again, I am the secondary earner in our house and my salary is principally for the children's activities, outings, etc, which of course are all on hold. Big savings on the work commute too.

PotteringAlong · 24/04/2020 18:42

OP why on earth don’t you cook at weekends?! I mean, if you can have lunch in a pub “a few times a week” then you’re not exactly rushed off your feet and so stressed thinking about what to eat that eating all meals out on Friday, Saturday and Sunday is such a hardship? Realistically, if you so that and then lunch in a pub a few times a week you only actually cook once a week and eat ALL your meals out of the home. You don’t not cook on weekends, you don’t cook.

Now you can afford it, so that’s grand. But you’re spending £35 a day every day on food. And that’s before any actual food shopping. And that is obscene really.

blue25 · 24/04/2020 18:48

We’ve saved an extra 1.5k this month. No restaurants, pub, theatre, takeaways etc.

Namechangervaver · 24/04/2020 18:52

My bank actually sent me a to say that my usual credit card payment (we spend on this instead of on a debit card and pay it off each month) is lower than usual. It's usually about £700 but it was £150 this month Blush

Lovingmylife · 24/04/2020 18:56

I was so shocked we have cut our food bill in half. Well supermarket spend. So I guess that's no clothes and sundries. We also saved £250 on petrol this month. It's the first month we have had a proper chunk to save in ages so that feels good.

Craftycorvid · 24/04/2020 18:57

At least £500 😳.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 24/04/2020 19:01

Despite my hours reducing to 2 days a week since mid-March, the current account has been around £2k in credit for 3 weeks. I got about 1300 in holiday pay for the end of the tax year, but normally we'd have pissed that away by now.

I'm trying to find a savings product, but they're all crap atm.

Verily1 · 24/04/2020 19:04

Nothing! Food is more expensive!

mindutopia · 24/04/2020 19:06

Well, I saved £720 on commuting and probably around £600-700 on nursery. Probably spending more on food and definitely more on alcohol though.

I’ve decided I’m cutting my commuting by half though when this is all done, because I just can’t justify being in the office every week and our work will have to change for probably at least the next year anyway (work in clinical research, we will be doing fewer appointments face to face until there is a vaccine).

motherofawhirlwind · 24/04/2020 19:07

Saved about £600 this last month despite weekly takeaway and increased shopping bill, and still paying for my parking space as don't want to lose it. However, haven't been able to get our boat back into the water so will have to pay more in storage fees.

NotMyUsualNameNoSiree · 24/04/2020 19:09

We've saved £1,500 per month on nursery fees + £400 travel + approx £500 bits and bobs (supermarket top-up trips, lunches, coffees, etc.).

I have no idea how much more our utilities are going to be, though.

imsooverthisdrama · 24/04/2020 19:10

I'm on 20% less pay as furloughed so I didn't think I've saved that much . I'm not using petrol so £50 a month approx no nails £30 a month and no clothes. I didn't go out that much but I supposed we did waste some money on frivolous things . We are spending more on food / drink though but I definitely have more money left in my bank account this month which I'd welcome as who knows how long I'll have a job for .

Rainb0w · 24/04/2020 19:11

I've saved about £600 this month on commuting bits and bobs going out no general fuel expenses plus I didn't get to go on my holiday that'll come back at some point plus my holiday money

RainRainGoAway2020 · 24/04/2020 19:12

We’ve saved quite a bit as we aren’t paying for nursery, school wrap around or commuting costs. On a personal level I’m spending nothing on coffees, lunches or meeting friends and it seems pointless buying clothes to sit at home.

On the flip side our groceries bill has rocketed.

TheChosenTwo · 24/04/2020 19:14

Just checked our joint account and we have £1,500ish more in there than we usually would do at this point in the month.
We are out a lot usually, eating and drinking, train and taxis, general spending like popping into a shop and just picking up little things, candles for the house or a present I think someone might like, socialising plus a lot of money is spent on petrol. I haven’t bought myself any flowers or anything like that which i often do.
However it is good as dh is self employed and not getting paid at all so handy to have the extra cash for a while.
I did think it would be around this amount to be fair, I rarely actually log on to my online banking though so it took me a while to reset all my details Grin

Butterymuffin · 24/04/2020 19:19

Similar to @Redlocks28. Hadn't realised how much of my spending was on top up shops and meals or coffees out. Even with a more expensive big supermarket shop it works out better. Savings on fuel and general travel costs have also helped. I am going to use my savings to pay off my overdraft and credit card though so it will have J sensible outcome.

HathorX · 24/04/2020 19:19

Saving on petrol, OH's gym membership, no clubs or sports or parties for the kids... yes life is a bit cheaper but boring.
And we lost £450 on a holiday we have had to cancel.
Overall I'd rather have my life back.

LifeBeginsNow · 24/04/2020 19:23

Around £2500. I have been made redundant so this is going to be how it is for some time. I had just about finished paying off the bulk of our debt so we are fortunate to now be able to live off DH's wage.

IndieKate · 24/04/2020 19:23

I've saved nothing as we don't have any commuting costs and don't spend money on socializing. Our food bill has increased as we're having to get more from the local shop as we can't get a weekly click and collect from Tesco.

JimmyTheWeed · 24/04/2020 19:26

For a start, since lockdown started,I've saved around 60 quid on takeaway coffees. Blush

MillicentMartha · 24/04/2020 19:33

Not much. Food pretty much the same, I take a packed lunch to work. Petrol a bit but work is only 3 miles away. Still getting the odd takeaway. And I’ve bought some garden furniture. Blush

hels1987 · 24/04/2020 19:38

We had £500 left before payday today. I'm only on SMP ATM so we're usually skint the last week of the month because SMP is around 1200 a month than my normal wage. It just goes to show how much money we waste usually on just popping to the shops or eating out.

hels1987 · 24/04/2020 19:39

That should be £1200 a month less.
