Reusable sanitary towels

I'm thinking of moving over to reusable sanitary towels. Partly for environmental reasons and partly because all the scents etc in disposable ones make me really uncomfortable.
Does anyone have any experience with them? What ones are good? What should I be looking for in a good one? How many should I buy? Sorry. A bit clueless here.

Sorry I can’t answer about reusable sanitary towels but can recommend period pants.
My daughter uses WAKU ones and thinks they are fantastic (well as fantastic as you can get about sanitary products). We looked at so many reusable towels and just got too confused about which ones to get so we opted for period pants instead.
They are quite expensive so I wait for an offer to be on (it was 50%off last night)

I’m a fan of the Cheeky Wipes washable pads and Thinx period knickers.

I prefer reusable pads to period pants. I got mine from TCS-eco who are fab.

I bought a cheap (about £15) packet of 10 from amazon. The plan was to replace with a branded (better?) set if I liked them.
They're charcoal fleece, so coloured outsides and black fleecy in the middle. They are fantastic.
The move around a little but nothing too bad. They're secured with a popper. I've leaked once, last month on a very heavy period. It was nothing major and didn't go through onto my trousers.
I've been using them for 4 months. I'll never go back to horrid plasticy dispoables. They are so comfy.
I think they'll be hot in summer due to the fleece but I'll see when the weather gets warmer.
I rinse them in cold water. It doesn't bother me at all. I'm not squeamish so it's fine. The hold so much blood ( sorry tmi!).
I sling them in the wash with a normal load. No fabric condioner and dry on the radiator or pinned in a neat line on the washing line 😁.
I used to get so sore and uncomfortable with dispoables. Even the non scented rubbed and chaffed.

My dd uses washable sanitary towels, we bought then on amazon. She has heavy periods and finds them great, very soft and comfy. How many you would need depends on how heavy/long your period is and how often you do washing.

I've tried a few. Didn't like cheeky wipes, too bulky for me and didn't suit my shape. But I LOVE my minivivi ones. They are so thin, absorbent and comfortable. Not cheap though.

I use a few different brands. Huggally wigally and tcs-eco are my favourite. There are quite a few different ones on Facebook.

Thanks everyone. I'm investigating all your suggestions. They are quite expensive but I'm thinking if I get 1/2 of what I decide on to start with I can her more as I go along.

I have some and think they are great - also have period pants, and use a mix.
I like the pads to wear with period pants for half the day, then remove and just wear the pants. Easier at work than changing pants. Plus they are cheaper and much quicker to dry than the pants too. They wash really well.
Mine were from an eco shop, but have just ordered some online for Dd from cheeky wipes and they look the same - dark grey fleece topped pad.

It sounds as though I have the same as @TheGinSoakedBoy and I too planned to upgrade. I’ve had them about 4 years now though and love them. I do use a mooncup most of the time.

You could look at the ones on etsy as well. Lots on amazon is wrapped in tons of plastic. I tried the imse vimse ones (more pantyliner size) thinking cotton inner layer is better but It started irritating after a while. The fleece lined ones are definitely better and there's no smell.

A timely thread. DD1 only recently started her periods and the last two days she's had a really bad rash or something. I can only think it's the pads, this is the first month she's used different ones because of availability on lockdown. So I've been thinking about reusables.

I do like the idea of period pants but they are so expensive. Trying to learn about reusable pads.

Can anyone link to the amazon ones they bought please. It's the ideal time to try them without incident while we're at home.

Word of warning about cheeky wipes. Fir the price they arent bad really but the cotton pads the shape is weird the wings didn't seem to fold up right.

I also like lady days. They are very thin and soft and comfortable.

I use a mooncup but leak at night so double up with Cheeky Wipes pads. Very soft and comfy and wash beautifully.

I was worried they would leak and that they would be messy and yuk to deal with.

I was really pleasantly surprised and don't intend on going back to disposable ones now. They absorb a lot and are really comfortable. Just give them a quick sink rinse with cold water and shove in the wash. They don't even look stained.

Another vote for Cheeky Wipes, their pants and pads are all brilliant. They wash and wear very well compared to other brands I've tried. I have endometriosis, am prone to sudden heavy flooding and they can even handle my overnights.

I bought some bloom and Nora ones recently. I've found them to actually be better than disposables. First time I've not leaked at night for years. They've got a bathroom bag you put used ones in, and unzip it and it goes straight in the wash.

I have a mixture of pads sooner if which are a white towelyn type material in centre and some are grey fleecy. For some reason the fleecy ones move around more I find.

I use the Hey Girls ones. I live in Scotland where the government funded a free trial so I didn't have to pay for them but, even if I had, I would say they are worth the cost.

I have Cheeky Wipes ones and love them. I think I have 2 night/big ones, 3-4 medium and 2 liners for the end of my cycle. I find that enough but I don't have heavy or long cycles.

I wear reusable ones daily because of a bladder issue, but they work well for periods too. I got these from Amazon, and just throw them straight into the washing machine when I'm getting low (I do a separate wash because I don't use fabric conditioner with them( and pop them on the radiator to dry. I love them and wouldn't go back now.

I've just bough modi bodi period pants to use haven't tried them out yet as my first pair arrived just as my period was ending but I have really heavy periods for first three days and I'm hoping these will work as I'm looking for something better to use long term
