Ice Cream Van in Lockdown

HotTamales · 22/04/2020 21:21

An ice cream van came along our road today playing it's tune. Next thing, all the kids are queued up at it. I thought that if the cafes and ice cream shops are closed, that ice cream vans would not be allowed to operate during lockdown. Anyone know what's the rules are on this?

Take away is perfectly legal. Even for cafes and ice cream shops, let alone vans!

Ours is selling bread milk and potatoes soooo...

JKScot4 · 22/04/2020 21:50

Ours is selling basics too, has only been in our street the last few weeks.
Could be handy for folk who can’t get to a shop regularly, there’s none local to me.
We did go out for a few ice cream wafers 🥰

Any takeaway I have had can socially distance (bring the bag of food out, put it on table and back up. I move forward to collect it, having prepaid by card). I don't see how an ice cream man/woman could avoid contact with their customer, taking money etc. And are all the kids standing 2m apart?
It may not be against the rules to operate but its against social distancing surely.

Ours has sold basics along with ice cream and sweets for over 20 years. When they stopped coming around every 2 hours during the day a lot of the elderly residents missed out. They're back now as of the end of last week and it's an absolute god send.

As long as you're social distancing in the queue, why not?

Apparently last weekend, one of the local ice cream vans put it all over facebook that he would be at the football stadium car park on Saturday afternoon.

He parked up and served in through the car windows, keeping social distancing.

Police came by and bought an ice cream!

It is probbaly technically border line, but as everyone staying in cars, social disctancing was observed and a load of kids got a small relilef from the monotony of lock down, I think it was a great idea.

No idea how he managed the money, maybe used a card reader.

I thought they weren’t allowed to operate at the moment.

I think it’s fine.

Presumably they’re either selling wrapped items, or are taking hygiene precautions if they’re still offering standard ice cream cones. And like others have said, some have started to stock basic necessities too.

ThreeLeggedCat · 22/04/2020 22:08

They can operate but need to obey the social distancing.

Also not all cafes are closed, some independent stores in my area of London are still open for takeaway drinks, with plenty of key worker discounts. Even chains like Pret and KFC have reopened select locations for takeaway too, an ice cream van’s operations aren’t dissimilar

There was one near to us last weekend (and only selling ice creams and drinks - not other food basics.)
The queue was very orderly with proper social distancing but I did wonder if it was allowed.
Two police officers walked passed and didn't seem in the least bit concerned so I assumed it was ok then.
