When did you stop getting ID’d?

Lighthearted but just that really.

In a strop currently as just got ID’d for trying to buy a small bottle of Mountain Dew. I’m 25... 25!!!
Asked the shopkeeper if she was pulling my leg and then pointed out that the 8yr old child next to me was my DD. She shrugged, removed the drink from my basket and told me you need to be over 16 to purchase energy drinks. So this woman genuinely thinks I look like a 15 year old.

Same thing happened about 2 weeks ago when I put paracetamol in my big food shop, couldn’t believe it but took that one on the chin a bit better as pegged it down to a one off.

As this seems to be a reoccurring theme for me it got me wondering how old people were in general when people stopped asking them for ID? I’m 25 with visible tattoos etc so I’m thinking the day may never come for me!

Early 30s, which is odd, as I started getting served in pubs at 14. I think they can be very conservative with their assessments... I’m pretty sure I don’t look 17.

LemonadePockets · 22/04/2020 15:43

I’m 33 and get ID’d regularly. Funnily enough from 16-18 I never got asked once!

ChanklyBore · 22/04/2020 15:46

I still get IDed. I’m 37. It drives me up the wall and I really resent it. It’s ruined plans for me more than once and in most cases it is a totally over-zealous application of an already massively extended age restriction.

I wouldn’t mind at all if I was under 25, as all the posters say.

assburgers1 · 22/04/2020 15:55

I’m 22 and hardly ever get ID’d for alcohol since 19 maybe, which is funny because I still get told by many people I look 16

(I don’t think I look 16 but I don’t wear makeup and some people forget what regular 22 year olds look like, with the likes of reality stars these days).

I think it’s because I look the nerdy type so people don’t believe I’d lie about my age

I have never got ID’d buying a drink in a restaurant since the age of 19

assburgers1 · 22/04/2020 15:57

I don’t even bother checking if I have my ID when I go to pub/restaurant

TerrorWig · 22/04/2020 15:59

Under 18. I was the one picked to try the offy.

TerrorWig · 22/04/2020 16:01

Btw, might not be the case now but when I worked in a supermarket I was told as I was under 18 I had to ask EVERYONE regardless of how old this looked if they were over 18.

Coz I’m sorry I find it hard to believe that so many over 40s look young enough for Challenge 25 let alone for buying lotto tickets....

pinkazing · 22/04/2020 16:35

@terrorWig I thought under 18s aren’t allowed to sell alcohol, in my supermarket they have to get approval.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/04/2020 16:41

I got ID'd last year. Age 36. I was very pleased!

ifyoulikepinacolada · 22/04/2020 16:47

I’m 30 - get asked all the time in supermarkets but corner shops, pubs and restaurants are fine

Pelleas · 22/04/2020 16:50

Never been asked for ID in all my life, even when I was 18. But I'm ugly.

Goshthatsmyneighbour · 22/04/2020 16:52

Still do and I'm nearly 44

IdblowJonSnow · 22/04/2020 16:57

On a regular basis late 20s. I did actually get asked a couple if years ago when I was about 42. It literally made my year.
I'm guessing it will never happen again now though!

squishedgrapes · 22/04/2020 17:02

When I was a student. After that was always in some sort of work garb, then had a child so definitely not. Now never.

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 22/04/2020 17:08

Recently (i.e. before COVID) got Id'd at the supermarket while with a younger colleague fetching drinks for our post-meeting socialising session.

She went through 1st. I went right after her and was asked for Id. I'm mid-thirties, she's mid-to-late twenties.

I thought it was great. Somewhat understandably, colleague didn't quite agree. Grin

Also, in all honestly: yes, I look young for my age - so much so that it tends to be a problem when I introduce myself as "the senior executive for X" in work situations. But I most definitely do look at the very least 26 on a bloody good day. No idea what that cashier was smoking!

Galvantula · 22/04/2020 17:09

Mid 30s maybe?

I'm early 40s now and it feels like quite a while ago. Grin

heartsonacake · 22/04/2020 17:10

I’m in my 30s. I still get ID’d Angry It is not a compliment.

AnneOfCleavage · 22/04/2020 17:10

Heybo26 got ID'd in ASDA yesterday and I'm 45. Was buying Sherry for one of the vulnerable parties I'm shopping for 😀

Time before that was about 3 years ago and I didn't have any on me (had just done an escape room so had left my bag at home as not allowed phones etc in the room) so had to drink cokes all evening. DH was with me and at only 11mths older didn't get asked 🤪

I'm pretty petite too so think that is it.

yearinyearout · 22/04/2020 17:16

Last got ID'd at 26. Wouldn't have minded but the person checking was about 18. Friend of mine got asked for ID in Tesco when she was 38, she was delighted.

Hoggleludo · 22/04/2020 17:16

I was 38! Ha. Loved it.

suchclearwater · 22/04/2020 17:40

I was 40.Confused

Chesneyhawkes1 · 22/04/2020 18:12

It mostly stopped by 35. But it happened the odd time after 40 😂 I think my work uniform looks a lot like school uniform. And I have to carry a rucksack

Ginfordinner · 22/04/2020 18:17

I had to google Mountain Dew to see what it is Blush

I think that being in a strop because you are lucky enough to look under 25 is a bit strong. If this happens to you a lot then you obviously look very young for your age. I really wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you always have some form of photographic ID on you.

As an afterthought, you are aware of the Challenge 25 strategy?

BogRollBOGOF · 22/04/2020 18:33

I was refused service for gin in my usual supermarket when I'd not got my driving licence on me following a DBS check earlier in the week. I was 37. Grin I got asked a few months ago at 38. I was half queried for an energy drink when I was mid-run at 37, she said 16... 18... and I replied "37" and she swiped it through Grin

I tend to get asked if I have a small, random selection of goods. I don't tend to be asked for a week's shop.

Production of my driving licence tends to result in much frowning and looking up and down at me and my DoB. I have a small build, and while I don't look teenage anymore, I can see why someone not looking too clearly might check for u25, which is 13-14 years younger than I am.

I was 29 when I had DS1. Despite being yellow and very swollen from complications, the MW was confused about my DoB thinking it was 10 years off!

Gwenhwyfar · 22/04/2020 18:35

I'm nearly 43. I've hardly ever been IDed. When I was a teenager, we didn't have this Challenge 21 or 25 thing and plenty of people were happy to serve you if you could possibly pass for 18. We got into some clubs at 15. I have vague memories of being IDed around 18 years old.
