Roll mat drum kit - how to learn?

Having bought the ten year old a mat thing for his birthday we are a bit stuck.
He’s had a play on them but is asking how to properly learn to play them.
I’ve had a look for videos but there are very few specifically for the roll mats. Does that matter? Could he just use one for normal drums? Or should he just be playing along to some music?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as googling isn’t bringing up much.

The drum position on those mats is simplistic to a normal drum kit. So, a normal drum kit tutorial should be fine.

Perhaps look at a metronome app on your phone to help him keep time.
