Fruit is NOT a special dessert.

Discuss.

I won't say which side I'm on.

Is a special dessert fruit?

Or

A big gooey sticky toffee pud/cheesecake/pie and custard.

Depends. I don’t normally eat desert but my guilty pleasure is tinned peaches and condensed milk. At a restaurant though it has to be chocolate fudge cake, maximum calorie to £ ratio.

ComeOnEileen11 · 21/04/2020 18:05

Fruit is a bog standard snack Hmm unless it's in a pie...

A special dessert is cheesecake, regular cake etc etc. A fancy yoghurt with the chocolate pieces/bits to add in might just make the cut into a dessert.

YgritteSnow · 21/04/2020 18:06

It absolutely is NOT. Fruit Salad for pudding days at school were the absolute WORST Sad

Desserts must have chocolate and/or cream. It's not really a dessert without tbh.

Paperyfish · 21/04/2020 18:06

An apple? No! Not special- everyday filler.
Strawberries and cream, tropical fruit salad, perfectly ripe mango, lychees then that’s pretty special. So depends on the fruit!

iklboo · 21/04/2020 18:07

I don't know. Sometimes a big bowl of mixed berries with ice cream and sauce is really nice in summer.

ComeOnEileen11 · 21/04/2020 18:07

Although I do often have fruit after meals, I wouldn't class it as a "special dessert" - this is the fancy stuff for birthdays, Christmas, family dinners etc

DartmoorChef · 21/04/2020 18:08

Depends what fruit it is.. An apple, orange banana.. Bog standard and nothing special.

Cherries, melon, kiwi.. More exotic and more expensive so a special treat.

Obviously this is more relative depending on your income.

userabcname · 21/04/2020 18:08

No!!! One of my colleagues once told me that her daughters get dessert on special occasions (like birthdays) and it's a handful of raisins...I've felt sorry for her daughters ever since.

Fruit was a special dessert when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s; I don't think I saw a real pineapple until I was an adult, similarly mandarin oranges. It was much cheaper to steam a syrup/suet pudding, or bung a rice pudding in the oven to feed a family than to supply fruit.

Now, fruit is the usual dessert; special occasions merit sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake and the like.

ineedsun · 21/04/2020 18:09

Nice fresh fruit salad or strawberries, lovely.

Banana, not so much

Livpool · 21/04/2020 18:09

Fruit is not a dessert.
At all

AdaColeman · 21/04/2020 18:10

If it doesn’t include chocolate and large quantities of double cream, it isn’t a dessert at all, and certainly isn’t special.

MrsEricBana · 21/04/2020 18:10

Could be - raspberries, mangoes, pineapple, strawberries, passionfruit etc are pretty special imo.

Sunnyhopefulness · 21/04/2020 18:10

As a child I was allowed 1 banana a week - it was a huge thing

Normal pudding was none grown plum crumble with the stones left in

MyDcAreMarvel · 21/04/2020 18:10

Depends on the fruit.

Flixsfoilball · 21/04/2020 18:11

Fruit is not a dessert in my mind

MrsEricBana · 21/04/2020 18:11

Satsuma = not

OhMargo · 21/04/2020 18:11

You are correct OP imo.

Fruit is something we SHOULD ingest but honestly it is just something to eat as part of a normal diet.

Give me a sloppy dessert, tiramisu, vanilla ice cream with melted choc, anything other than fruit. I'd be disappointed myself.

BUT, strawberries dipped in dark choc with fresh cream on the side is OK.

Dessert/pud should be something to look forward to not something we eat as a rule.

Sunnyhopefulness · 21/04/2020 18:11

I view a big pile of berries with ice cream as quite a treat

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 21/04/2020 18:11

Well, the best ever dessert is a ripe banana, double cream and a sprinkling of brown sugar. So that wins against anything else.

puds11 · 21/04/2020 18:11

If it’s fruit in it’s natural state then no, not a dessert. If it’s as mentioned above, tinned peaches with condensed milk then I’d say that is a dessert.

abstractzebra · 21/04/2020 18:11

Fruit is not even a pudding.
Puddings by law, should contain chocolate, caramel or vanilla and obviously loads of sugar! 😬

AConvivialHost · 21/04/2020 18:12

Tinned fruit with evap was our weekday pudding as a child, so definitely not a special dessert in my eyes.

AriadneCrete · 21/04/2020 18:12

I'm a big fan of fruit but it is in no way a special pudding. My parents aren't originally from Britain so even the "exotic" fruits are standard in my house.

@KatnissK, I feel sorry for the daughters too! How sad.
