On average per day how much are you spending to feed the family?

Per person?

We are family of 3, and did our last big shop 12 days ago. It seemed expensive at the time but it’s managed to last us to today (only just), but also covered Easter treats and a Easter roast dinner which isn’t the normal weekly purchases.
It’s around £13 a day which for 3 people doesn’t seem to bad.

However, we’ve run out of so many spaces and herbs and other condiments that this weeks shop also now seems surprisingly expensive.

Is there a daily spend you are happy with in general?

I’ve never been able to work it out accurately before because of top up shops and DH and I picking up lunches on the go sometimes

Our weekly shop has gone up (probably doubled) as we are now feeding the dc three meals a day on the weekdays which we didn't do on school days (breakfast club and CM etc).

I'm not tracking it though as we aren't being excessive and we are saving lots elsewhere (petrol, gym, coffees and meals out etc).

What we did do, is checked on 15th of the month for Jan/Feb/Mar and Apr and can see massive savings in Mar and Apr due to restricted lifestyle. Therefore we aren't counting what we spend on food.

ItWasntMyFault · 20/04/2020 14:48

About £12 a day for two adults and one ravenous 16 yr old boy.

I was just thinking about how much my shopping seems to have gone up, but when you break it down and realise it's only £4 a day each, I'm really quite pleased with that!

inwood · 20/04/2020 14:48

Just worked ours out and this week it has come out at £9 / person / day. That includes cleaning products and some toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, moisturiser) this week but not alcohol.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 20/04/2020 14:48

An absolute bloody fortune at the moment.

Family of five inc 2 teenagers.

I’m doing a Hello Fresh box because I’m bored bored bored of thinking up things to cook. So that’s £58.

We are going through cereal and milk and bread and snacks like no ones business so that’s

roonilwazlibismynickname · 20/04/2020 14:49

About £9 million

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 20/04/2020 14:49

Oops. Another £30 maybe twice a week.

So about £130 😬😬

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 20/04/2020 14:49

Ofgs 120. Trying to multitask.

Ulver · 20/04/2020 14:50

I’m spending way too much.
I think I have so much anxiety when I go to the shop that I panic. I also have a fussy eater who demands lots of processed food and snacks that I inevitably forget when trying to do a healthy food shop.
If I don’t use anything in time it goes in the freezer.

xyzandabc · 20/04/2020 14:51

Like you I've never worked it out before due to top ups, school dinners, work lunches etc. However now I can tell you I've done exactly 3 shops since this all started. Each between £125 and £150, so more than normal but they last 5 of us about 9 or 10 days. So actually it's only £2.50 - 3.50 per person per day.

This is way less than we'd normally spend I think. Considering school dinners are £2.20 per child or eldest at secondary usually spend £3-4 per day.

Ulver · 20/04/2020 14:51

There are less offers in the shops and prices seem to have gone up.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/04/2020 14:53

Yeah our school dinners are 11 per week for one child and I can feed her the full 3 meals a day 7 days a week for about that.

Puddlejuice · 20/04/2020 14:53

I'm probably spending about £5 per person, per day. Which seems to be not too much, although my weekly shop has doubled as we usually eat out a bit, DP works away etc.
Although I have also been using up the freezer as some of the contents have been lurking a while, so if I had to cost that in (mostly fish and meat) I guess it'd be another few pounds per person per day.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 20/04/2020 14:55

About £9 million

Yep.

DS14 never stops eating. Every hour on the hour he announces how hungry he is and tells me "I'm just going to make a little snackette".

DS9 I don't even know how he's still alive - from what I can tell he's surviving solely on giant tubs of Onken yoghurt and Kinder bars.

WhatHaveIFound · 20/04/2020 14:59

We're spending around £80/week for 2 adults and 2 teens so just over £11 per day. That includes all toiletries & cleaning stuff so i think we're doing quite well.

We've had to cut out a lot of luxuries due to not earning anything (self employed). So fruit juice/smoothies have been swapped for squash for the DC (I drink water) and very little alcohol. I think i've had one G&T in the last two weeks.

Lots of veggie meals and plenty of fruit in the house and there haven't been too many complaints (so far)!

JingsMahBucket · 20/04/2020 14:59

Can single people play? I’ll need to add up my receipts and take a look at an average day last week.

SureTry · 20/04/2020 15:01

Fudge I can relate to that, DS 14 eats constantly. DD 11 on the other hand is surviving on a diet of chocolate biscuits and milk 🤷‍♀️

OhCantThinkOfANewName · 20/04/2020 15:03

£7.50 per person per day.... including toiletries. Seems more than usual but we usually have lunch out....

jessnoah · 20/04/2020 15:04

Loads as we usually shop in Aldi but now we're getting deliveries where we can which is costing a lot more. Probably about £100 a week at the moment for two adults and a toddler, not great. But we also just get whatever we like as there's not much we enjoy for entertainment anymore so we've decided to eat our way to the other end of quarantine Confused

Rebelwithallthecause · 20/04/2020 15:05

I’ve definitely noticed a cost increase with the lack of offers and also having to buy more expensive brands if my normal ones are out of stock

With the 3 of us normal out of the house 3-4 days a week its been a jump on weekly shops but yes I think overall our spends must be down due to not buying lunches on the go

Our food budget has always included all food eaten - all 3 meals - for 5 people (four of whom are adult height and the smallest is adult shoulder height, so no tiny tots).

It's an irrational pet peeve of mine that people post on MN about food bills in normal times without saying how many meals in total they're covering, and being outraged that anyone spends over £30 a week without mentioning that their £30 is only for 4 or 5 meals each (15 per week total) for 2 adults and a 1 year old, because most of the 49 meals each person eats per week are eaten at work, nursery, in restaurants or as takeaways Grin

5 people eating 3 times per day is 15 meals per day.

I spend about €160 per week at Aldi but that includes cleaning products, toiletries and other household consumables (baking paper, toilet roll, coffee pads) and a couple of bottles of wine.

Probably 130€ is food.

About 18€ per day

3.60€ per person per day really isn't much, it just adds up with 5 people.

Some food items are more expensive here than the UK and some are cheaper. Despite importing so much food the UK isn't expensive for food imo.

Our spending on food hasn't changed though because the children are always home for lunch (school is 07:30-12:30) and DH and I always take ours with us from home, or eat at home (shift work).

Lyricallie · 20/04/2020 15:09

We're about £6 per day per adult. We spent £140 at the last big shop 12 days ago. But that included some Easter eggs and things that were a bit more expensive.

Scotinoz · 20/04/2020 15:13

About a million a day to feed 2 bored adults and 2 bottomless pit small children (5 and 6). Not assisted by the supermarkets having an unsteady supply chain meaning I'm buying premium brands since it's those or nothing 😖

BeansOnToast4T · 20/04/2020 15:14

Family of 2 adults and 2 teens. I am spending on average £80 a week. That is for cleaning stuff, wine, toiletries etc. I make a small amount of meat go a long way and buy what is in season and cheaper cuts. I make a lot of soups to use up bits of veg and don't buy ready meals. Tend to shop in Lidl.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/04/2020 15:19

About £22 day for the five of us.

BoogleMcGroogle · 20/04/2020 15:21

A vast amount. In part because we are all eating every meal at home. That's 84 meals per week instead of 60. Plus snacks. Also, I'm cheering us all up by buying lovely things. On the plus side, we've eaten so much better, or meals are fresher and healthier. Although this is perhaps counteracted by the chocolate and wine inhalation,
