On average per day how much are you spending to feed the family?

Per person?

We are family of 3, and did our last big shop 12 days ago. It seemed expensive at the time but it’s managed to last us to today (only just), but also covered Easter treats and a Easter roast dinner which isn’t the normal weekly purchases.
It’s around £13 a day which for 3 people doesn’t seem to bad.

However, we’ve run out of so many spaces and herbs and other condiments that this weeks shop also now seems surprisingly expensive.

Is there a daily spend you are happy with in general?

I’ve never been able to work it out accurately before because of top up shops and DH and I picking up lunches on the go sometimes

11 pound per day. We are eating less though..

PickAChew · 20/04/2020 20:29

And I've not been able to bake my own bread because flour!

Glittercandle · 20/04/2020 20:35

About £5.70 per person (5 of us). £200 a week sounds a lot but not so much when broken down.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 20/04/2020 20:37

About £4 per person per day including drinks, although I've not factored in toiletries or pets! Most months I spend on average between £10-£20 a day on travel, work lunches, socialising etc, and that's not including food, so I'm certainly saving a lot. Also I'm now meal planning every meal because I'm bored and thinking about food constantly Grin

MegUffin · 20/04/2020 20:48

Don't work things out daily

There are four of us and we spend about £200-250 per week on food and alcohol...

Umnoway · 20/04/2020 20:52

Six of us although the youngest is only one. We spend about £120 a week in Aldi.

AnnaNimmity · 20/04/2020 20:59

also a huge amount here.

it's around - £8 per person per day. But that includes the cats and dogs too. It's alot, but we're not eating out and we're drinking nice bottles of wine. And it's waitrose.

Oblomov20 · 20/04/2020 21:02

£150 a week. Plus, more probably. 2 x teenagers who are eating an incredible amount.

This is mad!

Mustbethewine · 20/04/2020 21:08

We're spending a small fortune on food at the moment! I'm buying my vegetables from a fruit and veg wholesaler and my meat from a local butchers who both deliver and that's around £60 per week there and I'm probably spending another £40-£50 in asda on bits and Bobs. £20-£30 on ingredientsto make cakes and desserts. So its £120-£140 a week. Pretty big jump from the usual £80 a week. There's 4 of us in the house.

WoollyFoolly · 20/04/2020 22:07

We're spending around £180-£200 a week between 5 of us. Shopping in itself is more expensive because there are fewer deals and we have to cover every meal and snack.

Ulver · 20/04/2020 22:12

I bought a huge amount of food from Lidl about six weeks ago. A pre lockdown trolley full of dry goods, pasta, antipasti etc. Bloody bargain @ £120
Spent a similar amount in Waitrose for a basket of food and some plants.
There is a huge discrepancy in costs in different supermarkets.

planningaheadtoday · 20/04/2020 22:15

About £150+ a week for 6 of us. Huge amount.

I used to shop about in home bargains, Chinese supermarkets, discount shops, main shop in Lidl and and bulk buy brand names in Makro.

I'm now having to buy everything from Tesco or Morrison as they are the only ones I can get home delivery slots with.

I can't quite believe the extra ££.

It's subtle, for example, before I would get a toothbrush for £1, now it's £3 for two. So I'm buying more for more money.

Groceries I'd normally get in Lidl and it's a good 20-30 Pence an item more in Morrison's and Tesco. Each item is about a third more expensive.

It's being offset by £300 less in fuel each month so we are more than compensating. But I always try to avoid the big supermarkets and now I have no choice as I'm shielding.

Oly4 · 20/04/2020 22:15

£200pw for a family of five, three meals a day

DinosApple · 20/04/2020 22:17

Four of us (2 primary age DC).
£100 per week, all meals, snacks and toiletries and cleaning products.

£14.29 per day.
£3.57/person/ day.
I think that's not too bad money wise when broken down like that.

ElGuardiandenoche · 20/04/2020 22:21

We’re a family of 2 adults and 3 teens (very nearly 13, nearly 15 and 18). We’ve always had breakfast at home, packed lunches and dinner at home so there really is no difference in lockdown.

Before lockdown we were spending about £80 a week during lockdown it’s slowly gone up week on week as we find we can’t buy the cheaper products we used to. Our last shop was £108 so about £3 pppd.

Ifeel1000yearsold · 20/04/2020 22:24

About £15 a day for 4 of us.

Impatientwino · 20/04/2020 22:27

Way too much 😬 4 of us here and in the last month we've spent £1000 in Sainsburys. That does include the weekly shop purchased today and all cleaning stuff, toiletries, nappies and wipes plus we drink a lot a fair bit so that includes wine, beer, gin and fever tree tonic. We eat a massive amount of fresh fruit and veg too so that adds up.

Think it works out about £8 per person per day.

That said I have been keeping my fridge, cupboards and 2 freezers full in case we need to isolate for 14 days or longer so plenty of that money is still visible in the kitchen if that makes sense.

We've also not spent anything on takeaways or meals out in the last month so I've been buying more things like steak, lamb and king prawns and additional store cupboard ingredients as I enjoy cooking different and new things but don't usually have the time.

That said we had breaded fish and beans tonight for dinner Grin

bellsbuss · 20/04/2020 22:38

I was previously spending between £150-£180 a week and this has now increased to £200-£250 a week for a family of 6.

BackforGood · 20/04/2020 22:41

Glad to see your post @SoloMummy
Am wondering if others have been put off posting because they are so far off some of the other posts.
My estimate is around £1.50 - £1.80pp here. My (adult) dc have more time on their hands so are baking a cake rather than buying, are making more meals from scratch home made soups, dahls, curries etc.
We are serving a lot more meals at home, but 5 people eating together is more economical than feeding individuals I guess, and expending less energy without being able to get out to sports, training etc., and lying in more.
We're also working way through some things from the freezer and cupboards that came to light in the big tidy up Grin

TheWindowDonkey · 20/04/2020 22:44

About £160 a week for four of us, which is our usual spend. We’re always all at home anyway so it hasn't really changed tbh.

womaninatightspot · 20/04/2020 22:46

About 20 quid a day for six of us. Includes booze, cleaning stuff. Def. gone up we're getting bread/ milk delivered though.

Keeoe · 20/04/2020 23:07

Just done a quick recce - over the past 4 weeks been spending between £4.75 and £7 per day per person. However, our 3 greys food is included so probs takes it down a lot. Not including wine/beer however. This requires a small third world country's budget atm 😔

ISawATiger · 21/04/2020 08:56

About £10 a day on average for 2 adults and 2 small children. Don't think it's too bad when you break it down, but I'm always disappointed we can't stretch a £100 shop out to last 2 weeks, as dispite the constant snacking, the kids don't eat huge meals, and we all eat the same so not preparing different things for them. That's including toiletries, cleaning products and pet food too though, so really it's not bad at all, and I'm surprised it's not more

Thesearmsofmine · 21/04/2020 09:01

There are 5 of us(2 adults, 3dc between 4 and 9) and probably around £2.50 per person per day. That’s 3 meals and a snack.

Dollywilde · 21/04/2020 09:01

Usual spend in non CV times is £200 a month, of which about £150 is food - so £5 a day which covers dinner and breakfast for two people.

This month we’ve spent about £100 extra, £75 of which has been additional food, so about £7.50 for two people doing breakfast lunch and dinner.

Breakfast daily is cereal and milk, lunch is a toastie with salad and dinners are various as usual. I think we are spending a bit more now just generally though as we are saving so much being indoors and not buying travel cards (travel alone is £400 per month for our house so WFH is a big saving). So we’re a little more relaxed about buying the nicer bits than we would on a usual month the week before payday.
