On average per day how much are you spending to feed the family?

Per person?

We are family of 3, and did our last big shop 12 days ago. It seemed expensive at the time but it’s managed to last us to today (only just), but also covered Easter treats and a Easter roast dinner which isn’t the normal weekly purchases.
It’s around £13 a day which for 3 people doesn’t seem to bad.

However, we’ve run out of so many spaces and herbs and other condiments that this weeks shop also now seems surprisingly expensive.

Is there a daily spend you are happy with in general?

I’ve never been able to work it out accurately before because of top up shops and DH and I picking up lunches on the go sometimes

We spent £200 and that was 24 days ago. Done one £13 top up shop since. That’s for 2 of us as DH is doing lipo trim at £60 a week 🤦‍♀️ It’s me and DS (17) Probably got enough for about 2 weeks more so we’re happy. Including lipo trim that’s around £500 for 5 weeks for 3 adults which is around £14 a day. It’s the lipotrim that’s doing it but DH was very overweight and having him around longer rather than dying due to obesity is worth the expenditure 💖

Aldi now has all my money

confusedofengland · 21/04/2020 11:20

I'm spending £50-£60 per week for a family of 5 (2 adults, Dses age 11, 9 & 6). Includes £5-£10 on alcohol per week. Usually I spend £30-£40, so a fair bit more. But I also don't usually buy alcohol (as we go to France a couple of times per year to stock up & were due to go).

YodaEveryday · 21/04/2020 18:25

@confusedofengland I’d love to know your meal plan and what you’re buying for that! Ours is easily double and doesn’t include alcohol!

Mrsmadevans · 21/04/2020 18:36

About 25 a day for 6 adults and 2 cats who are fed Felix and bloody prawns Hmm l kid you not !

confusedofengland · 21/04/2020 19:27

@YodaEveryday to be honest I don't really do meal plans Blush I just seem to be a cheap cook/shopper, out of habit, and we've never really been well off. I don't buy organic & I don't buy anything ready made. Also, my DC eat absolutely anything so I can buy whatever I like without worrying whether they'll like it.

Over a typical fortnight we'll eat tomato pasta, cheese & bacon pasta, lasagne, bolognese, sausages with some sort of potatoes, scrambled egg & beans, egg & chips, whole roast chicken, risotto, fishfingers, pizza, frozen salmon/tuna fillets, hm chicken curry, quiche with jacket. I shop at Aldi & buy their value range where possible. Breakfast is a choice of cornflakes, weetabix, bran flakes or toast. Snacks are fruit (Aldi super 6 or seasonal fruit), crackers or biscuits. Lunches are sandwiches, salad & crisps or hm soup. Hope that gives some idea, sure I've missed something out!

About 250 a week all in at the moment Shock

2 adults, 2 pre schoolers, 2 cats

Lots of fresh fruit and treaty bits at the moment have pushed it up. Plus some things that I would never normally buy like fancy pizzas because I’m fed up of cooking all. the. time.

Lovelydovey · 21/04/2020 22:21

£300 a fortnight for 4 of us (kids eat larger portions than me so could prob count as 4 adult portions).
So just over £20 per day. But I’m treating lockdown as a chance to try some new recipes and we’re not spending on breakfast club, lunches at work, school dinners or meals out.

BackforGood · 21/04/2020 22:39

Wow, WheresMrLion that is a LOT.
I know we're all different, but two adults and then two pre-schoolers can't eat that much.

PickAChew · 21/04/2020 23:26

I've only ever used a basket in Waitrose and it's never come remotely close to £120, even with wine in it. More like £50 if I buy a lot of meat and wine!

Missing waitrose, tbh. It's a 45 (currently 55) minute bus ride away and can't be justified, unfortunately.

Wheresmrlion · 22/04/2020 00:48

It’s a lot isn’t it, and we don’t drink alcohol! Includes toiletries/nappies, cat food/litter etc. Two small people that eat like hoovers. All meals at home, good quality meat and cheese. Half a tonne of soft fruit. Lots of baking so nuts, chocolate, butter. It soon adds up to a scary amount! Works out at about £8/day/person once you take the cats out of the equation.

Food is our thing so we’re ok spending it in lieu of other stuff but it does feel like prices have gone up too.

YodaEveryday · 22/04/2020 11:00

Thanks @confusedofengland. Not really sure why it’s so much more then although I do buy free range chicken and eggs and organic milk which obviously adds some cost. Usually I try to buy higher welfare meat and only eat meat 3 times a week but I’m actually finding it harder to eat vegetarian meals at the moment due to the lack of tins on shelves and purchasing limits on products.

Your meals seem a bit simpler than I would normally cook as I would put a load of vegetables in eg pasta with tomato sauce but otherwise they’re along similar lines to what we eat.

We get through a huge amount of fruit and veg every week and it’s nothing fancy, just getting enough basic stuff for every meal and for everyone to have a piece of fruit each a day. Maybe we just eat a lot!

anothernotherone · 22/04/2020 11:26

YodaEveryday it's all those things together, but soft fruit is still out of season and doesn't store so will be being imported from all over. The soft fruit is a massively experience luxury if you're buying a lot of it. Most people eat a lot of apples in winter plus cut up carrots, and bananas are cheaper than grapes and berries due to bulk importing I guess... Up to you but that's a massive airmails footprint to counterbalance your ethically sourced organic meat...

anothernotherone · 22/04/2020 11:26

Expensive not experience

anothernotherone · 22/04/2020 11:27

Arg airMILES mit airmails

YodaEveryday · 22/04/2020 13:37

Thanks @anothernotherone but I didn’t mention soft fruits? Just for my children and partner to eat an apple each a day is 35 apples a week... it’s not buying expensive items that’s the problem, just the sheer quantity needed to feed everyone!

anothernotherone · 22/04/2020 21:23

Sorry, If was Wheresmrlion with the half tonne of soft fruit, got you mixed up!
