Portal, Echo Show or something else?

We want to get something for my technophobe DM. She doesn't even have a smartphone - is wedded to her 80s style Nokia brick. She has, until recently, rejected all attempts to encourage her into the world of technology (years ago she got a Freeview box for Christmas and politely returned it to me on Boxing Day).

She is missing the DGC and has finally asked if there might be a way to talk to them "with faces" .What would you recommend? Does anyone have a Portal or Echo Show and would recommend? Or something else like an easy tablet that might let her do other things (eg email)?

We bought my technophobe elderly Mam a portal - it's brilliant !

Watching with interest as similar issue. DM has Windows laptop but apparently Messenger video does not work. Was thinking of Kindle fire but think she'd still need a skype or zoom app.

LIZS I wondered whether a Kindle fire might be a better bet. I think I would need Skype to call her on both Echo Show and Kindle?

cherrytreeblossom did you need to set up a Facebook account for your mum to use it? And you use WhatsApp to call?

She already had Facebook
But I opened it and set it all up ready and left it on her doorstep

You add people to favourites so on her screen she just has to tap our face and it video calls us through Facebook

You can use WhatsApp as well if you wish x

Does she have wifi at home?

Did you make any progress? Does anyone know if zoom meetings can be accessed without signing up to an account, if meeting holder sends an invitation by email with link?
