Who is angling to be next Prime Minister?

The Times has the knives out for Boris today.

So who is behind this? Is your money on Gove? Could he stab Boris in the back once again?

Not Raab or Hancock.

Gove but he doesn’t look the part. We chatted about this the other day - generally voted in male PM’s are fit-ish, middled aged and look the part (DC, TB) or robust looking/command an audience (BJ, GB).

It’s very shallow but they do get judged on how they look. I really liked Rory Stewart but he’d never lead.

Raab looked like a rabbit in the headlights at his first 5pm briefing when BJ was ill.

TheStuffWasBad · 19/04/2020 15:52

I bet Keir Starmer would like a shot...

Davespecifico · 19/04/2020 15:54

I think Gove might transcend the looks issue. He’s probably quite a mighty presence in government.

My money is on Gove doing the backstabbing. He used to (still does?) writr for the Times

topcat2014 · 19/04/2020 15:54

Gove genuinely thinks he could do it.

topcat2014 · 19/04/2020 15:55

Shame Keir is on the wrong team

timetest · 19/04/2020 15:56

Gove. He thinks he’s entitled to be PM. He’s not.

bettybattenburg · 19/04/2020 15:58

I wouldn't trust any of them not to stab Johnson in the back. I hope it's not Gove as schools are going to need to retain teachers now more then ever and saying Gove being PM would help would be like saying that the devil might encourage people to go to Mass. I expect it will be Gove though.

curdsandwhey · 19/04/2020 16:03

Jacob Rees-Mogg 🤮

bettybattenburg · 19/04/2020 16:07

Jacob Rees smoggy? 🤬🤮💩Ok, let's have Gove.

AnneOfCloves · 19/04/2020 16:09

Gove’s been sharpening the knives

muddledmidget · 19/04/2020 16:09

Could Jeremy Hunt come back to the front benches. Currently out of favour, but with Johnson gone, he might be a stabler pair of hands (and I can't stand the guy, but at the moment he seems to be the safest)

CeibaTree · 19/04/2020 16:11

Didn't Gove already stab Boris in the back when DC resigned, and BJ pulled out of the leaders race? So probably him again I'd imagine. Or could be Priti Patel who is pissed off at being sidelined in the current crisis.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/04/2020 16:15

The Goviot must be machinating behind the scenes. He always has done, it's unthinkable that he isn't doing so now.

However, I think he'll delay his public run at until the current problems are over. Much like Corbyn's Labour Party he is quite risk averse and will not want the job whilst he could get held responsible for something that is highly visible and actual matters on a day to day basis.

Caveat: I'm an ex teacher and have absolutely no respect for the man.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 19/04/2020 16:23

I can’t name one single person in that govt who has any qualities other than being totally self serving. They are all a bunch of shysters, they make me feel sick the lot of them.

TSSDNCOP · 19/04/2020 16:25

Do you have a link OP, don't subscribe so it may not be visible.

Keir must be having to take tranquillisers to stop himself.

I suppose at least with Gove you know he'd stab you in the front as well as the back.

Standrewsschool · 19/04/2020 16:38

I hope we don’t have another change of government. We could do with some stability. I’m a bit fed up of general election after general election.

(Ps. Don’t have any political affinity to any political party or person).

QueenOfThorns · 19/04/2020 16:40

I would second Jeremy Hunt.

TheSpottedZebra · 19/04/2020 16:43

Wild card -Thomas Tugendhat to be our next PM.
Gove for the stabbing which will go tits up, but TT seems very prominent in press recently and seems broadly sensible.
J hunt to make another half hearted run and will paint himself as a friend of the NHS but it won't quite fly.

Nope, am not a Tory.

Pogmella · 19/04/2020 16:47

Wouldn’t be surprised if BJ stepped down. He didn’t want this much work, just fancied the status. He can claim health concerns and that he needs to put his family first.

noblegiraffe · 19/04/2020 16:47

tssdncop it’s behind a paywall but here’s Owen Jones doing Gove’s dirty work by going through the key bits:

Dogsaresomucheasier · 19/04/2020 16:56

I don’t think it matters. It’s the owners of the right wing press who are more than happy to cooperate with said back stabbing that are the problem...just as they were with Brexit.

TheoneandObi · 19/04/2020 16:58

Gove. He's forever damning his boss with faint praise. Or worse, no-commenting on stuff which leads us all to the correct conclusions

Unescorted · 19/04/2020 17:00

It has the feel of people behind the scenes (not civil Service, but media owners, donors and lobbyists in the Tory party) putting the brakes on year end crash out Brexit due to the Covid induced uncertainty in the global economy. A Whoa! Bessie moment. Boris Johnson is too closely linked to a gung ho, death in a ditch Brexit sloganism to survive a U-turn of that magnitude. He has served his purpose.

Howfar12 · 19/04/2020 17:16

Rishi Sunak
