Do you close all the curtains?

In the bedrooms I mean. Dc are at their dad's (for the first time) and I just went into their rooms to close the curtains, then wondered why I was bothering. Do you? I never did before they came along.

I never close the curtains downstairs either., I live rurally so there's no one to look in. But my friend (who lives nearby so also rural) think I am most odd for this.

We have no curtains downstairs as I hate them.

I hate having the curtains open after dark as I feel exposed and vulnerable because everyone can see in. As the curtains are cream it makes the room a lot lighter to draw them when it is dark outside. Plus, in winter, it makes the room a lot warmer.

Those of you who never open bedroom curtains, do you not open the windows to air the bedroom? I can’t bear not to strip the duvet back and air the bed with the windows open.

Sereyus · 18/04/2020 23:47

No, only the blinds in the bedrooms. I don't think I have every closed curtains or blinds downstairs

BusterTheBulldog · 18/04/2020 23:57

Never close any blinds or curtains here Confused

Ginfordinner · 19/04/2020 00:03

Don't any of of have close neighbours who can see into your house when the lights are on, and it's dark outside?

EngagedAgain · 19/04/2020 00:04

I do, for privacy and to keep light out in summer and cold out in winter.

KrabbyPattie · 19/04/2020 00:09

The curtains at either end of my through lounge don't even shut properly, I just liked them and they frame the windows! I have really good quality blinds up at all windows, though, including my bedroom. I only ever shut the curtains there when I am on night shifts. Every other room, curtains are pretty much decorative and the blinds do everything else.

springydaff · 19/04/2020 00:29

Yes I close the curtains otherwise there's a big black gaping hole at the window once it gets dark.

Plus I don't want people looking in and seeing every last thing about my life.

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/04/2020 00:41

My neighbours opposite don't have any curtains downstairs in their lounge (at the front of their house). I can see everything they do if I choose to stand at my window and look across the road. That's why I close mine at dusk.

longtimecomin · 19/04/2020 04:44

No, we never pull the curtains in the living room because they are 'arranged' so they always look nice. We just close the vertical blinds. If my kids go to their dads I don't close their curtains. I live in a cup de sac and I doubt anyone could see much apart from ceiling or a bit of wardrobe.

I close the blinds when I am not in and when I'm sleeping. If I'm not in, I don't want to tempt burglars who may see laptops and various hardware on the table, and if I'm sleeping I don't want the sun to accidentally shine in and stab me (or baby) in the eye. When I'm in and awake I open the blinds, it's a nice ritual to let the light in. Also once I was looking outside for some time to what I thought was a lovely quiet scene with no people in it, when I finally noticed a shirtless neighbour partially hidden, standing still in-between his garden plants.

NordSjoen · 19/04/2020 06:54

We’ve had a spate of burglaries recently so I have been closing them in DS’ room and the playroom even when he is not here. Also the living room every night as several neighbours have reported people hopping over back fences. If they can’t see inside, hopefully they won’t bother trying to get in.

hiredandsqueak · 19/04/2020 07:04

I close all the curtains and blinds when it starts to fall dark and open them all as soon as i get up as well as windows to let in some air. It's a bit of a ritual I suppose.

letitpea · 19/04/2020 07:20

I'm not unusual then! I close my bedroom.curtains and the dc at night. No others though. I can't see any houses from and windows, so no chance of people looking in from their own houses. There are houses along the road though.

I need to get blackout blinds as though my bedroom curtains are pretty heavy weight, they still let a lot of light in which always wakes me up

I like the ritual of opening and closing curtains. It’s like a sort of domestic witch craft - shutting out the outside world and drawing protection over the house; welcoming the morning light and fresh air. But I happily acknowledge that I’m quite mad.

I like that too Smile

To the pp saying they never open their curtains.....are these rooms just kept in darkness then? Confused Does it not make it awfully dingy and like a crack den?

Frownette · 19/04/2020 13:13

No-one can see me from the bedroom unless they shimmied up a tree - not worth the effort - though I do keep them closed when sun comes up early and I don't want it in my eyes for early morning cup of tea!

hopeishere · 19/04/2020 13:23

Bedroom - every night and morning. They cost an absolute fortune so I like to admire them! Plus I like a really dark room to sleep in.

Sitting room - on the first floor so no-one can really see in. We close them in winter to keep the heat in.

DSs have blackout blinds. One in DS2's room is always closed. And DS1's - it just depends. His room gets a lot of light from a roof light in the ensuite anyway.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 19/04/2020 13:53

I only close the curtains in winter on an evening as it makes me feel warmer! Then from March to October they are open. The windows are open all the time come sun or snow, In december I keep them open as I like the fairy lights but after that they are closed daily again!

Tink1990 · 19/04/2020 13:58

Only my bedroom curtains get closed as I get woken up by the early morning light. No other curtains get closed at all, they are all 'arranged' to look nice so don't want to mess them up!

KellyHall · 19/04/2020 14:04

We have thermal blackouts because we live in an old property so need them to keep from freezing at night. I open them and all of the windows each morning, mostly for air circulation to prevent mould and then close them all at night for warmth.
