CONTRACEPTIVE IMPLANT

Hi this is a strange one but basically I had the contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) fitted back in mid January after giving birth to my son in May 2019. Since then my body has completely changed I have literally almost every symptom from constant bleeding to chest pain, headaches, nausea etc. The main problem is my throat is tight almost always. I did read online it’s a potential symptom but I’m so worried and wondering if anybody out there has experienced this same symptom, I have never suffered with anxiety before but I feel like I’m in a loop hole because I’m thinking crazy thinks when my throat swells! The doctors refused to take it out and said I had to travel out of my town to a walk in clinic and wait from 8am but may not be seen so I didn’t get round to it. Please help! Thankyou in advance x

I had massive problems with my implant and my doctor refused to take it out. They finally changed their mind when I told them I'd take it out myself in the waiting room. In hindsight I should have told them I wanted to try for a baby, I'm sure they would have taken it out sooner in that case!

I had mine removed. I did my best with it but I'd had enough. I think I was only fortunate in that I'd moved house, so I went to a different surgery than had fitted it.

I had mine removed after 18 months.

From reading several threads on here, the quickest way to get it out is to say you want to try for a baby.

I had mine out in under a year because it gave me cystic acne.

I agree the best thing is to say you want ttc, then go to family planning.

Mine made me quite ill for a long time, mainly trying to control my weight and the daily bleeding was unbearable.
Mine was quite deep so had to get it out under general, I had to tell them I was going to try for a baby as they refused to remove it.

Throat swelling is not a documented side effect so the chances of it being the implant are one in a million. It's not reported in the BNF nor in studies.

Unfortunately due to covid you can't have it removed currently anyway as it's not urgent.

Akemat123 · 19/04/2020 00:07

My doctor has also refused as have the clinic who put it in for me!! Did you suffer with throat tightness at all? I’m going to have to tell them I will take it out myself!

Akemat123 · 19/04/2020 00:10

Hey I have read online on the DRUGS website that is a legitimate website that logs all possible side effects of drugs and medicines, throat swelling is under 1in100 symptoms/ side effects

RoryGilmoree · 19/04/2020 00:14

@Akemat123 yes of course, but that would be acute and would occur soon after it was inserted. This implant went in over a year agi therefore it's not acute. The BNF documents all registered side effects of all drugs and is used by doctors and pharmacists within the nhs, it's not in there as a documented side effect. Therefore this is unrelated.

I did have my removed as wanted to TTC but even that took ages as nurse that could take them off was on sick leave so ended up going to family planning clinic. Wish I had never had one in first place. Had constant spotting for months wouldn't have one again

Akemat123 · 19/04/2020 00:51

I have only had this in since January this year and the swollen throat started around three to four weeks after, could it be an allergic reaction? I’m so scared

@Kimani123 Have you ever found out if it was the Nexplanon implant that was causing you the throat tightening? A friend of mine has this a lot lately. Just like for you it started a few weeks after the 2nd implant. First time she didn't get any symptoms, so it's very strange. Not alergic to any food, it seems. Thanks
