My ds 8 was complaining of intermeiitent ear pain at the weekend (sunday). On tuesday the gp prescribed penicillin for ear infection. Since then hes in huge amounts of pain every few hours as his calpol/ neurfen wears off.

He was up most of last night in pain, during the day he hasn't slept despite being up most of the night, very lethargic though. Hes just woke up crying in pain again now.

What else can I do to help?

Thanks

Did the gp see them or was it a phone appointment?
I’d seek further advice in the morning. Trying to sleep propped up on pillows can help. When is the next pain killer dose due?

Flowers Ear pain is awful. Hope your son is better soon.

It was a phone appointment. Hes just had more calpol but I dont think he can have more neurfen till morning. Box says 3 doses in 24 hours only

Aww poor wee thing. So the doc gave you antibiotics on Tuesday? They should start kicking in really in the next day or two?

I’d make sure you have enough pain relief to keep topping him up then assume it will have cleared up by Sunday. If not then definitely call the GP back on Monday.

Hope he’s ok very soon

Hopefully the Calpol will kick in soon. I’d definitely speak to the gp again in the morning. They might well want to see him.

I'd phone the surgery tomorrow, the ABs should have kicked in by now, he may need AB ear drops to blast the infection... your poor son, I found ear infection pain to be the worst I've ever had.

Prop him up and give him a hot water bottle to lay his ear on. That was the only thing that ever helped when I had them as a kid.
Ear infections are horrible. We all had them has kids and I'm sure everyone remembers how horrible they are, it's just something for them to get through. He will be fine. Antibiotics take time to start working so calpol and nurofen and hot water bottle until it gets better.

You can piggyback ibuprofen and Calpol ( paracetamol) so he doesn’t have gaps without pain relief. I second the PP’s advice about using a hot water bottle to rest his ear on, perhaps wrapped in a fluffy blanket? The upside is that the infection will probably burst soon and give him instant relief.
