Better coffee... cafetière or pod?

Surprisedtosaytheleast · 16/04/2020 19:32

Definitely not doing beans. This is the choice cafetière or pod.

In your opinion.... which makes best coffee?

TIA!

Mocha pot - its what the italians use

INeedNewShoes · 16/04/2020 20:46

Filter!

evilharpy · 16/04/2020 20:51

Aeropress or Hario V60. Both much much easier to clean than a cafetiere and make better coffee. I find cafetiere coffee always has a sludge at the bottom no matter how you grind.

Agree with others stovetop pot is ace. I used to use cafetiere but went to a friend's house and she gave me a cup from her stovetop pot. I went out that weekend and bought one and have never looked back.

rvby · 16/04/2020 20:55

Of the two choices, cafetiere is best. Only because of waste generated.

In terms of flavour and making a cup at an enjoyable temperature, they're equally terrible.

Thanks all

* Ready ground coffee is disappointment in a cup.*

I’m not a coffee expert clearly because I have to say - I absolutely lovely my ready ground!

I’ve decided to stick with my cafetière. I do love it but had the option of taking a second hand one from a sweet friend. But actually the environmental implications have put me off.

Thanks agaib

I find the pod coffees have a plastic after taste I'd have filter or cafetiere any day over pod. (In fact I'd actually have instant over pod!)

Lonelycrab · 17/04/2020 09:37

Cafetière here although I do like the metal screw together jobs you put on the stove but just too much hassle for me.

The one thing is most coffee isn’t good enough, even supermarkets finest stuff- I use Lavazza only, the red packet, it’s miles better than the others I reckon. One bit of good advice the ex gave meGrin

LifeChangingMagicOfDoingSodAll · 17/04/2020 09:40

We have a filter machine and love it.
It's got a timer so you can wake up to the smell of fresh coffee wafting from the kitchen

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 17/04/2020 09:41

OP what I find with ready ground coffee is that (assuming you've bought something decent in the first place) aroma and taste are perfectly fine on the day you open the packet, and maybe the next day - but it really deteriorates quickly after that and does just become disappointing.

If you must buy ground coffee get it ground for a cafetière if that's what you're using. If it's too finely ground it ends up as sludge at the bottom which the plunger can't filter.

Surprisedtosaytheleast · 17/04/2020 09:43

@perdita

Thankfully I don’t find that. Love my cafetière. I just had option of something different but now decided against.

I use coffee for cafetière.

Aeropress.

peajotter · 17/04/2020 09:51

Another option is a drip filter (pour-over). We use a machine which keeps it warm and slow and use paper filters so they compost.

Or you can get a single cup filter and use paper liners, much cheaper and more eco than a pod machine, and less messy than a cafetière.

Spam88 · 17/04/2020 10:16

Definitely cafetière of those two options, although I prefer filter.

perdita you just aren't drinking enough coffee if it's got fine to degrade after opening 😂

cologne4711 · 17/04/2020 10:19

Definitely not pods, you only get half a cup and they're not very eco-friendly.

I have a filter coffee machine and use ground coffee. A local coffee place does fresh coffee with beans, but bean to cup machines are so expensive so I'll stick with ground.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 17/04/2020 10:26

But you don't need a bean to cup machine! Just a bog standard grinder. (Preferably burr rather than blade) and the most basic drip filter.

Surprisedtosaytheleast · 17/04/2020 10:30

But why would I buy something no matter how cheap - if I’m very happy with the status quo?! I had the offer of a pod machine for free and I was tempted to try it. I asked for people’s thoughts. The environmental issue was raised and I realised that not for me.

I love the coffee I use in my cafetière.

stovetop for solo coffee. cafetiere with guests around. Areopress for camping :)

MulticolourMophead · 17/04/2020 10:32

I'm the only one who drinks coffee in our house, so I use a cafetière. I buy ready ground, but once opened I keep it in the fridge in an airtight bag and I find this keeps the flavour and aroma fine.

I wouldn't use pods as they're bad for the environment (DD would nag me on this anyway).

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 17/04/2020 10:33

Sorry - wasn't replying to you, OP. I was disagreeing with cologne who mentioned the expense of bean to cup machines!

saraclara · 17/04/2020 10:34

Is an aeropress less mess thsn a cafetiere?

@CoffeeIsMyOnlyJoy absolutely! Once you've pressed your coffee through, it forms a little compressed puck of grounds that just pops out into your bin. You don't actually need to clean the Aeropress at all in between, as the seal itself 'squeejees' the sides as you plunge. I just give the end a quick rinse most of the time. And it makes the best coffee. I did a taste test when I first got mine, and the difference in flavour between the two cups of coffee (Aeropress and my cafetiere) was amazing. I only use a cafetiere if I have visitors now, and need to make several cups.

Branleuse · 17/04/2020 10:35

Pods are rubbish unless you only ever drink an espresso sized coffee here and there. Ive got a pod machine and I need two pods for a normal sized mug and the coffee isnt even properly hot. I rarely use it.

I have an aeropress but I always make a mess and have spillages with it. Ive now gone back to cafetiere

saraclara · 17/04/2020 10:37

@CoffeeIsMyOnlyJoy this video shows how easy it is to clean

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/04/2020 10:38

I'm thinking of getting an Aeropress - have heard lots of good things.
