Word count ks3 essay

Please can someone tell me the rough expected word count for a year 8 essay.

I told my dc they should write about two sides of A4 they have large handwriting.

Trying to fob me off telling me a paragraph is enough. To which I disagreed and insisted they do it properly.

Anyway as a rough guide what should they be aiming for.

I’m a teacher. I’d expect a Year 8 essay to be a brief introduction, 3-4 paragraphs, then a brief conclusion. A single paragraph is not enough.

A paragraph does not an essay make.

Intro to outline
3 main paragraphs

Depends on the subject. English/history/geography one paragraph is not going to be adequate, science practicing for a gcse 6 mark question it might be. Has it answered what they are being asked?

Thank you all that was helpful.

It is a english comprehension essay.

An English essay needs quotations (generally one per paragraph, analysed in depth). The conclusion could include a personal response to the text. Your DC should probably include terminology (e.g. metaphor, repetition, simile).
