Does this sound like a scam?

Selling item on Facebook.

Lady enquires about postage as she can't travel to collect due to lock down.

Asks for photos and videos of item work.

I oblige.

We chat about the shared interest, share photos of crafting etc.

She agrees to pay full asking price plus courier.

I say it has to be fully insured. Another £9
She agrees.

She says she will pay by bank transfer.

Didn't come through but bank holiday so I wait.

Still not there this morning.

She says she's called bank and they put a hold on her card because it was an unusual payment.

She says it's not been lifted and she will resend the money.

Says if the first payment does come through later can I return it.

She seems really nice. I've just been burned before by nice people.

If she does a bank transfer she can't get the money back can she?

I'm sending item tracked and insured.

It's NOW been lifted. Sorry not 'not'.

She can't retrieve the money from a bank transfer, no. So probably fine

I'd still be a little wary of selling further afield. I take it you put it on fb marketplace?

GreenTulips · 14/04/2020 09:08

She can do a charge back for services not received

I would if it’s expensive, put the item on eBay as buy now and then send the code

You have more protection and have buyer seller information

Much harder to do a chargeback as she'd have to show services not received and op is sending tracked.

DonkeyKongQueen · 14/04/2020 09:14

She's resend and I've got the money.

It's over £200

Im sending it tracked, insured. I also sent videos of it working, extra photos.

A hold on a card shouldn't affect a bank transfer as you dont use the card details. Most banks use faster payments system so money should be with you within 2 hours. How much is the payment for? Sounds a bit dodgy tbh

JollyAndBright · 14/04/2020 09:21

Bank transfer is definitely safer than Paypal, it’s almost impossible for a bank transfer to be reversed, you have to jump through a lot of hoops and prove you have been refused a justified refund and even then the bank can refuse.
She’s most likely have to go to small claims to get the money back.

It doesn’t sound like a scam to me.
I can believe the bank freezing the account if this is an account where she only usually makes small purchases and then all of a sudden there is a £200 transfer.

DonkeyKongQueen · 14/04/2020 09:30

I've got the 2nd amount she sent now.

She just said can I check later to make sure the 1st lot didn't come through.

I would be wary.

justanotherneighinparadise · 14/04/2020 09:45

Actually I would too. Have you now received two payments are she wants you to refund one?

DonkeyKongQueen · 14/04/2020 09:49

No I've only got 1 payment.

She asked me to just make sure I don't get another today.
