Help!! Need a boy name!

babynamesarehard · 13/04/2020 22:48

Hey, having a boy and finding it impossible to pick a name for him. Husband and I are so fussy and every name I see I hate. I feel like girls names are so much easier! Here are the names I might have gone for if it was a girl as maybe that might help?!

  • juniper
  • Tabitha
  • Dorothy
  • ottilie
  • bronte

I am finding it so hard to even narrow down any names as there are literally none I like

  • I hate names that are too popular like Leo or Noah
  • I hate names that are part of a name like Freddie or Ollie instead of a whole name
  • I hate classic names like George or Charles as they seem boring and safe
  • I hate names that are too try hard like Apollo or Bay
  • I don't like modern trendy names like kayden or Kai

I feel like every park I go to has about a million elliots/Finlay's/Reubens etc so don't want anything like that.

We'll never find a name!! Only one I've even remotely considered for more than a second was max as I think it sounds strong and I like the X sound but immediately ruled out by DH as he thinks it's a dogs name.

Please help xx

@NameChange30 I like Arlo but I know a few so don't think I can use it! I like atticus but not sure, I like atlas but again it's quite hard to imagine a tiny baby called that!

I know the baby will spark joy! I just meant that when I say my daughters name I love it so much, even after a few years of saying it a million times a day! It suits her, has lots of nickname potentials and I just want a similar sense for the boy. Can't say her name as might be a bit outing with everything else I've said

I think you need to re-think your attitude to names. Lots of children enjoy sharing the same name. It makes them feel part of a little club. It makes bonds across year groups as you know other children with the same name. Adults often enjoy meeting someone with the same name it’s some common ground or an ice breaker.

I don’t see why Angus or the other names you mentioned would encourage bullying. They’re nice names.

You need to pick a name you like and not worry if it will be popular or not. You never know who will be in his class there might be one Thomas and two Pembrokes.

Crookshanksthecat · 15/04/2020 09:28

I can understand not wanting to have a really popular name but I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can pick a really unusual name and then there could be another child with exactly the same name in their class at school. Just pick a name that you like.

I actually didn't like having the same name as several other girls in my year. It is mildly annoying at work as I have a colleague with the same name.

However, I think my name was probably top 5 in the year I was born. I don't think there's any need to avoid all names in the top 100! Top 20 maybe.

My DH and I are both teachers so found it incredibly difficult to agree on names as we were so reminded of pupils we had to work hard with. We followed Home and Away at the time and got our first son’s name from that. I had one beautiful pupil with the name. Our second son had a family name which is popular now but much less so then.

It is hard when you’re a teacher!

@Santasunhelpfulhelper I have literally never met anyone who likes having the same name as other people they then have to spend time with. You become Charlie M or Emma L and it's depressing. Especially in a school where you're desperate to be a person in your own right and not just one of many. Even now when I meet someone with my name I feel a bit rubbish as I know I'll become X with the glasses or X with the curly hair etc as people try to define me. I think it's sad and I don't want it for my children

What part of the country do you live in OP? That's going to make a difference to how popular or acceptable certain names are.

LionKingOrTigerKing · 15/04/2020 10:30

I would just say, I have an unusual name for a female, it's more known as a males name, and I absolutely hated it growing up. And i still do now, to the point I'm considering changing it. People always get it wrong, I get called by different names, and when I introduce myself the conversation always gets sidetracked by my name as it's different and unusual.

I would've loved to have a name in the top 20's.

babynamesarehard · 15/04/2020 10:32

I'm in south east, just outside London

Santasunhelpfulhelper · 15/04/2020 10:55

I understand where you’re coming from OP, but it’s not an issue for everyone. My name is fairly popular and I like it and like meeting people with the same name.

My mother and sibling have unusual names and hated being the only ones. My mother was jealous of all the Lindas and Susans and wanted to be part of the crowd.

Milton, fergus, Angus, Julian

How on earth do you think those names are ‘encouraging bullying’ but Juniper and Bronte aren’t?!

You sound crazy. It’s not sad to have the same name as someone else, kids get their sense of self from lots of things, not just their name. I have identical twins, they look the same and are constantly referred to as they twins’, that’s why that sounds ridiculous to me. Imagine people genuinely mistaking you for someone else because you look the same rather than making a mistake because there’s two Louise’s in your class!

And to answer your question, I personally don’t like any of the names you’ve chosen, they sound pretentious and completely try hard in my opinion.

TerrorWig · 15/04/2020 11:40

Ugh my punctuation disappeared. They’re referred to as ‘the twins’.

ThatsNotMyName123 · 15/04/2020 11:50

I wanted a name that wasn't common also, and I didn't want a name that would be deliberately shortened (just call them the short name in the first place 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Here a few I like;

August
Roman
Elias
Tobias
Remy
Albie (too popular now though)

Horsemad · 15/04/2020 11:50

I do think you're overthinking this slightly OP! 🙂

It doesn't really matter what you call your DC (within reason, obviously) they will be their own person and their friends will most likely shorten it or call them a nickname.

forgivemeimnew · 15/04/2020 12:06

I quite like Nathaniel, shortened to Nate
