Help!! Need a boy name!

babynamesarehard · 13/04/2020 22:48

Hey, having a boy and finding it impossible to pick a name for him. Husband and I are so fussy and every name I see I hate. I feel like girls names are so much easier! Here are the names I might have gone for if it was a girl as maybe that might help?!

  • juniper
  • Tabitha
  • Dorothy
  • ottilie
  • bronte

I am finding it so hard to even narrow down any names as there are literally none I like

  • I hate names that are too popular like Leo or Noah
  • I hate names that are part of a name like Freddie or Ollie instead of a whole name
  • I hate classic names like George or Charles as they seem boring and safe
  • I hate names that are too try hard like Apollo or Bay
  • I don't like modern trendy names like kayden or Kai

I feel like every park I go to has about a million elliots/Finlay's/Reubens etc so don't want anything like that.

We'll never find a name!! Only one I've even remotely considered for more than a second was max as I think it sounds strong and I like the X sound but immediately ruled out by DH as he thinks it's a dogs name.

Please help xx

Sweet Christ, most of those names would eventually result in a head kicking here in Scotland! Some are truly awful.
My favourites are James, or Seamus for the Gaelic version (Shay-mus), and Theodore (Theo).

Dave. There aren’t enough Daves being born these days and there needs to be more for this generation.

My absolute favourite boys name is: Elliot

Other suggestions are
Ignacio
Cassian
Solomon
Dexter
Leon
Sonny
Theodore (Teddy)

Crunchymum · 14/04/2020 07:22

Also Rufus, Magnus and William.

Darbs76 · 14/04/2020 07:23

Kit could be short for Christian as well as Christopher. I like Theodore - is fairly popular but I’d rather popular than a bizarre name personally. Good luck choosing! My boys are Nathan and Dylan (daughter is Zahra)

Crunchymum · 14/04/2020 07:23

Or Issac or Louis

I think it's really useful to consider whether you would like to be called a the name you are choosing for your child.

I had a slightly unusual name as a child (which ironically is now in the top ten!) And I absolutely hated it. I wanted to be called Laura or Sarah and fit in. I also wanted to be able to find a crap souvenir with my name on because I never could!

I honestly can't imagine many kids these days wanting to be called Dorothy or Bronte.

My son is called Jack, which you find boring. But he's anything but boring because he's a vibrant, interesting person. He loves his name. When he meets people, he says his name is Jack, and they immediately get it and get on with getting to know him. The trouble with 'interesting' names is that introductions are interrupted by the other person feeling compelled to say "oh, that's an interesting name, where is it from?" And as a child that drove me absolutely mad.

Thank you so much for the suggestions, I like a few of them! Atlas is nice but not sure about nicknames?

OP posts:
MinnieMountain · 14/04/2020 11:31

Don't worry too much about nicknames OP. They evolve from things other than first names too. DS won't let us call him any shortenings of his name.

Would Atlas suit where you live?
