Anyone ever had a lump at the top of their leg?

It's just near my knicker line but on the leg side not the groin side.
I rang my doctor 2 weeks ago and he said he was most probably lymph something or other and nothing to worry about but I am worried. I think I need someone to see it rather than a telephone diagnosis but I'm fully aware the nhs are at their limits and don't want to stretch them anymore.

Can anyone shed any light on what it can be so settle my worries? I forget a lot of what the gp said and every night I can't stop worrying about it.

I have a corker and it's a varicose vein. It's on the groin side though.

Stillmonday · 13/04/2020 14:41

How do you know it's a various vein? Had a doctor seen it?

Well I have an ugly one on the back of the same leg and I strongly suspected it was an extension of the same vein. DH nagged me to go to the Doctors, and the GP said she was 90% sure that's what it was (I said I was 95% sure!) but sent me for a scan anyway. It was clearly a vein, the sonographer showed me the valves etc, and even I could see them.

Yes - it was a cyst. I paid to have it removed privately as I hated it.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/04/2020 15:03

I had one in that position and I assumed it was a swollen lymph gland. It got bigger and more sore over a few days and I was considering seeing my GP when it burst, so it must have been an infected cyst. I drained it in the shower every day and put antiseptic cream on and it went away completely in about a week after it had burst.

letsdolunch321 · 13/04/2020 15:11

Can you describe the lump is it like a cyst or boil?

Is it red/inflamed? Has the skin around lump swollen?

Stillmonday · 13/04/2020 15:55

It's under the skin and the skin moves over it so not attached to my skin. It's about the size of a baked bean and around that shape too.

DD had one and had all sorts of tests and procedures to find out what it was. The thing they repeated over and over again was that 90% of lumps like that (under the skin like yours, similar size) are one of two things, fat or fluid. And even if neither - like dd - 90% of the 10% aren't sinister iyswim. They were convinced it was a vein at first (it wasn't though).

We were advised to watch and wait at first to see if it self resolved but when it got bigger, they decided to investigate so I think maybe watching it for a week or two might be what they'd suggest anyway.

@ShowOfHands what did it end up being?
You feel a lump and can't help worrying !!

Yes, top outer left thigh, it's a cyst and needs removing really.

altiara · 13/04/2020 18:01

I had one and it went away after a e (2 weeks I think)

altiara · 13/04/2020 18:01

After a while

Purplewithred · 13/04/2020 18:06

I have one on the front of my thigh, it’s mobile and soft, GP thinks it’s a lipoma. Agreed a watch and wait strategy. I’m in my early 60s.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/04/2020 18:11

I have one, it's not inflamed and I can't feel it. I generally forget it's there, I haven't been to the doctor.

Windywuss · 13/04/2020 18:17

I had one that was a bursar they thought. Try not to worry we get lumpy sometimes as we get older.. It's not usually anything drastic

moanyhole · 13/04/2020 18:25

I have one on top of my knee. Agreed a wait and see approach as most likely a lipoma. A lump of fatty tissue.

Stillmonday · 13/04/2020 18:29

It's on the inner thigh.

How long should I wait before I contact the gp again (assuming it doesn't go)

I have one about half way up the front of my thigh. Kind of soft, not painful (occasionally itchy). Had it for 5+ years now. GP had a feel of it a couple of years ago and made a note of size/location but thinks is it is probably a fatty cyst/lump. Nothing to worry about. Hasn’t changed since I first noticed it. I’m carrying some extra weight Blush so it’s not visible. If it was, I might consider paying to have it removed but for now I’m just leaving it.
