Shamelessly posting for traffic. Dh has an issue that has flared up this evening. In A&e we are always admitted straight to resus in this event...it’s not life threatening in the next few hours but needs to be dealt with ASAP. He won’t go due to covid19 fears....can anyone give me some reassuring stats to help convince him that it’s far better to go!!!! Stubborn sod. SHIT!!!!

He has no symptoms of Covid and has been isolated 3 weeks

Dr Katherine Henderson, president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, said patients with health problems should not stay away because of concerns around coronavirus.

helpfulperson · 12/04/2020 21:37

Honestly, an easily dealt with issue is better than an emergency in a few hours. The risk from COVID is minute compared to the risk of loads of other thinks. Tell him to 'man up' and go.

CoffeeRunner · 12/04/2020 21:37

All A&Es that I am aware of have 2 sections. A green (clean) side & a red (Covid or “dirty”) side.

If his condition requires urgent treatment he must go. The risks of not going would outweigh the risks of going for sure.

BelfastNonBlonde · 12/04/2020 21:42

My friend is an A&E Doctor (in NI).
She was literally sent home from work early last week because it was so quiet...

LochJessMonster · 12/04/2020 21:46

A&E is super quiet at the moment because people aren’t going. It’s also completely separate to Covid wards and the doctors and nurses are practicing very strict hygiene procedures.
It’s probably the safest it’s ever been.

Dyrne · 12/04/2020 21:46

I think this is a really bad side affect of the media hype of “rushed off their feet” NHS staff.

As PP have said, medical professionals are worried that people aren’t going to A&E when they need to and will suffer as a result.

Most departments are strictly dividing their sections between “Covid” and “Other” so the risk is minimal, especially when compared to not going in at all.

As you know, they don’t admit people to Resus for shits and giggles. This is serious.

LochJessMonster · 12/04/2020 21:47

Also, if he doesn’t go and his illness develops he may have to be admitted and then he’ll be taking up vital resources.
Better to get it sorted now when it’s relatively simple.

AmelieTaylor · 12/04/2020 21:48

Sorry can't direct you to stats but lots if Drs been on Ztv today saying they're worried about people not going in with the usual stuff 'heat attacks, strokes, broken bones etc'. Stressing that ther say if the NHS IS still
Open!!

Tell him to stop being silly. If he needs treatment he needs to go.

ScrapThatThen · 12/04/2020 21:52

Yes will be a separate side for non Covid and staff will wear level 1 PPE. Boss him.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 12/04/2020 21:54

Thanks all. Trying to persuade him. Have pointed out that they’ll be keeping the staff safe as well as everyone else. He won’t need to sit in the waiting room etc.

MitziK · 12/04/2020 21:54

What's wrong with him?

It sounds like it's serious.

Could you put it as 'If you don't get in the car with me Right Now and go to the hospital, I'm going to call an ambulance'? and follow through with the threat?

CooperLooper · 12/04/2020 21:56

I was in A&E last week for a broken bone and it was really quiet. Separate areas for C19 and non-C19 patients. He'll be fine going, tell him not to worry.

DameFanny · 12/04/2020 21:56

My neighbour had to go in on Friday for suspected TIA. It was echoey quiet. Tell him to go for the novelty of not being surrounded by drunks kicking off - once in a lifetime opportunity!

But seriously - he needs to go

rjebgf · 12/04/2020 21:58

I expect the waiting room will be almost empty. covid wards are separated anyway. He shoudl definitely go or he could end up dead.

roses2 · 12/04/2020 22:01

We've been to A&E twice since the lockdown started for non covid issues. Both times only one other person there and seen super fast. This was in Central London. The hospital was probably cleaner than the uber I took to get there! Go and don't worry.

Holdingmybreath · 12/04/2020 22:04

Covid patients are being diverted away from A&E,any suspected when they arrive are moved to a seperate section.
You will probably be seen quickly because the walking well are not, thankfully, attending so the department is functioning as it should do for those who really need it.

Pickupapenguinnnn · 12/04/2020 22:07

Leave him be then. He can cry about it later when it's super serious. People like that get no sympathy from me.

HollowTalk · 12/04/2020 22:09

I think sometimes you have to take matters out of his hands. If I were you I'd call 101 and speak to them about it.

LilacTree1 · 12/04/2020 22:10

A&E is probably very quiet.

NewAccountForCorona · 12/04/2020 22:18

If he doesn't go now to the green side of A&E he'll end up in ICU which certainly won't be safe. Can you convince him that way?

ICU is much less likely to be separated out.

SunshineCake · 12/04/2020 22:23

Tell him to write a note for his family and kids justifying why he didn't go, in case he dies.

You don't get choices like this, or get to dick about with your health, when you have dependents.

Standrewsschool · 12/04/2020 22:24

Maybe a bit extreme, but can you phone 999. If they send an ambulance, will he go?
