If you could have the free run of any building in the world right now, where would you go?

All alone, no school parties, no guided tours, no overly officious guides, you can nosy behind the scenes and in the private areas.
For me, it would be one of the major art galleries of the world, the Louvre or the MMOMA, maybe a museum like the smithsonian.

The Louvre, to try to beat this:

Great thread. And there are so many I dont know. But somewhere with a secret passage as I've always wanted to go in one and never have!
And somewhere where I could have a good root around because I'm nosey. Chatsworth House perhaps.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/04/2020 00:19

The National Archaeological museum in Athens I think.

(But maybe the BM for a wider cross section of world cultures).

MrFaceyRomford · 13/04/2020 00:57

Fort George, Inverness. It's huge and I could see the bits the public never get to. BTW the military museum and the excellent cafe would have to be included.

Gingerkittykat · 13/04/2020 01:40

The National Museum of Scotland, I've been loads of times and never seen it all, plus I could play in the science museum without having to fight with the kids.

Then I would go and spend the night at Stobo Castle, the spa is amazing and I could cook myself some great food from their fully stocked kitchens and have a great time making cocktails at the bar.

pollyglot · 13/04/2020 01:41

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul or the Pantheon in Rome. Oh, maybe the Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna - love love love it.

managedmis · 13/04/2020 01:46

The Met.

Or Chatsworth.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 13/04/2020 02:05

The Vatican Museum! I'd want a key for all the cases and hidden rooms too.
Or, maybe Tate Britain, so I could run my hands over all of the sculptures.
Sissinghurst with a F&M hamper and my BF.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 13/04/2020 02:21

The Opera Garnier in Paris. My favourite building in the world.

Time40 · 13/04/2020 02:28

The fabulous swimming pool and mineral pools at the Hotel Gelert in Budapest (if they still have water in, and are usable).

OpthalmosVerde · 13/04/2020 02:37

All of these! Great thread

I’ll add

The Hermitage
Taj Mahal

safariboot · 13/04/2020 02:41

Tempted to say something like the Bank of England or Fort Knox. Pocket a couple of souvenirs Grin.

But serious answer, the Vehicle Assembly Building.

OpthalmosVerde · 13/04/2020 02:46

Oh the Horniman Museum.

mamakoukla · 13/04/2020 03:38

Site 51, Roswell

Strawberrycreamsundae · 13/04/2020 03:46

Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the White House for sheer nosiness!

wanderings · 13/04/2020 08:46

The Crystal Maze. It was a childhood ambition.

Cherrysoup · 13/04/2020 09:57

The Musee D'Orsay

Just you and me, then!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 13/04/2020 10:40

One spa in Edinburgh, I used to work there a thousand years ago and they have this outdoor hydropool that over looks the castle that you can sit in with snow on the ground. In fact everything in there is amazing.

MrsSnitchnose · 13/04/2020 13:58

@mamakoukla brilliant answer! I'll bring snacks if you let me tag along Smile

TudorRoses · 13/04/2020 14:02

Primark in Oxford Street Grin

I have yet to go in there and for it to be anything less than shoulder-to-shoulder unbearably crowded.

MontysOarlock · 13/04/2020 14:14

Far too many good places to choose from and all of them listed here.

But The Tower of London with a guide who knows everything.

I love history, you can touch a brick that was made by someone hundreds of years ago, and made into a wall of a palace or house. You might be the only person to ever touch it since. You are literally reaching back in time.

I felt this way when we visted Hampton Court Palace walking though the doorways.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 13/04/2020 14:43

Ooh Harrods or Selfridges to try on as much expensive clobber and diamonds as I like and douse myself in fancy perfume.

The Vatican Museums or the Pantheon. Actually all of Rome. I’d love to just wander. Imagine standing in St Peters Square totally alone. I’d like to be able to help myself to gelato too mind.

WifOfBif · 13/04/2020 14:44

I went to St Peters Basilica in September last year, it was breathtaking.

I’d love to go again and explore it with nobody else there.

OpthalmosVerde · 13/04/2020 14:45

Oxford St is a good shout. I’ll take Liberty pls :-)

corlan · 13/04/2020 14:49

Angkor Wat in Cambodia. I spent a few hours there years ago, but I was dragging two very bored children with me. Would be great to wonder around all on my own.
