MNHQ won’t be doing individual deals with the little banners up at the top of the page: those come from a bulk advertising deal sold by an intermediary and are partly driven by your own web search history. They set boundaries about what advertising they will and will not take. Sometimes dodgy adverts get through anyway under false pretences, but I suspect that it never even occurred to MNHQ to say they wouldn’t take adverts from Philip Morris because tobacco advertising is illegal. The bastards obviously think they’ve found a loophole of some kind.

Times are hard though in case you hadn't noticed. Any platform that relies on advertising is struggling hugely. I assume you want Mumsnet to survive?

I do want them to survive but I’m not sure platforming porn ads ties in with their ethos. I’d be off on a shot if I saw that shit.

Mumsnet as soon as they are aware of this will block the adverts

Ive been getting dodgy Google ads since this started, I wonder if scammers are the only ones paying for adverts at the moment

I'm sure it must be illegal to advertise tobacco products. Surely there must be some mistake? Although I'm not sure how you'd advertise tobacco by mistake.

Ads keep the web free. It costs money to run servers, pay developers, content creators, rent premises, keep the lights on, put tea bags in the staff kitchen.

While not all ads are great and I get why people use them, at least consider white listing the sites you want to support.

It's either that or face the fact that we will all have to pay for subscriptions to our fav sites.

Obviously haven't seen it / clicked it but it looks like it's just "letting people know what the menthol ban means".

I can't really see the outrage tbh.
