WHAT has eaten DD’s Easter egg!!!!!!

I got my kids some Easter eggs last week. With limited storage space in the house, I just left the bag with the eggs in it in a cupboard in our garage. Tonight, whilst the kids were happily watching a movie, I sneaked out and brought the eggs in. I popped the bag in our shoe cupboard and then put the kids to bed. I’ve just got round to popping their eggs out for the morning and one of them is half eaten!

Would this be the work of a mouse? We have never ever had any other food in our garage. This is the first and only time. Does this mean the mouse must still be in our garage and if so, how would I get it out?

I’m also having a panic now that I could have carried the mouse (if it was a mouse) into the house in the bag 😩

Poor DD won’t get her Peter Rabbit egg in the morning.

Speaking as once who has had a very recent, unfortunate and unwelcome set of house guests, I would say rat. Mice don't do that much damage in that space of time...

MrsSnitchnose · 12/04/2020 01:26

Thanks for that @Tdaadfb100 I really needed to see that fucker (major arachnaphobia) The only remedy for that would have been to burn the house down

Can't get worked up over mice, may I recommend a cat OP

Saw it was last week that you stored them... if it were rats, you'd have nothing left... I shall
stand asidezz

EasterDisaster · 12/04/2020 01:43

I’ve changed my mind and thrown them all away 😩

Op the others will be fine don't toss them!

mathanxiety · 12/04/2020 01:55

See if you or DH can get out tomorrow morning very early to buy whatever replacements you can lay your hands on.

I think you were right to throw the chocs away.

EasterDisaster · 12/04/2020 02:01

They’ll wake up to this. No egg but at least that’s lots of chocolate! That bar was my stash for lockdown 😅

And a letter to explain a mouse ate their eggs!

Good job OP you made the right decision and their Easter box still looks great!!

Megan2018 · 12/04/2020 02:08

We live rurally, mice everywhere-I can’t get overexcited about mice.
My cats catch a lot but sometimes let a live one go in the house, there’s currently one under the fridge. It will either escape or the cats will get it eventually.

My baby is 7 months and giggles at the mice in my stable, they always dart out when I move things or muck out. They are really cute, although I must admit I hate it when they make me jump.

They only need a space big enough to fit a biro in @EasterDisaster so leaving a door open unnecessary! They have probably lived there happily for some time and won’t be leaving either. If you’ve not noticed them before I’d just leave them be.

I’d be perfectly happy to eat the intact boxed eggs if they have been cleaned.

Sorka · 12/04/2020 02:09

That looks like a rat to me. They can do a lot of damage but they’re quite cautious so will try a little of a new food source to see if it makes them sick before eating it all a few days later. Sorry OP.

Sorka · 12/04/2020 02:10

Your replacement display looks great!

EasterDisaster · 12/04/2020 03:00

Thanks @Sorka

Erm, yes they do. We left chocolate advent calendars out in the hearth, went away early on a Saturday morning, late back Sunday around 7/8th of December so still lots of chocolate left. Came back to find one calander half empty, the other entirely stripped of all chocolate.

We caught three mice over the following week so it had been quite a feast for them, but they had got through it in 24 hours.

DuaneDibbley · 12/04/2020 08:48

Definitely mouse droppings, although the damage looks like a rat’s work Shock

Roselilly36 · 12/04/2020 08:51

So pleased you have binned it all OP, not worth the risk, it’s a horrible thing to have happened, but better safe than sorry. And you have done to great job, so your DD’ aren’t disappointed. An Easter none of us will ever forget that’s for sure.

drspouse · 12/04/2020 09:03

if you've got mice you don't have rats because rats scare off mice.
Tell that to the mice here..

PlanDeRaccordement · 12/04/2020 09:12

I’d bin all of it personally the Hanta virus (much nastier than COVID as death rate is 36% or six times greater) is spread by rodents. I would not trust antibacterial wipes to keep my children safe.
A man in China recently died from Hanta virus after catching it on a disinfected bus.....

Queenoftheashes · 12/04/2020 09:18

I’m so scared now; my Easter eggs are in the garage (so I don’t eat them) and we have seen a mouse out there (Amy Jo Johnson) which was cute at the time but now I’ve got the horrors and feel a bit stupid.

drspouse · 12/04/2020 09:19

I'll lend out my cat for reasonable rates...

LadyEloise · 12/04/2020 10:45

I know of somebody who died from Weil's disease.

SummerSazz · 12/04/2020 11:39

I always bait my mouse traps with Cadbury's chocolate buttons melted on to the little spikes. Very effective.... sorry OP
