WHAT has eaten DD’s Easter egg!!!!!!

I got my kids some Easter eggs last week. With limited storage space in the house, I just left the bag with the eggs in it in a cupboard in our garage. Tonight, whilst the kids were happily watching a movie, I sneaked out and brought the eggs in. I popped the bag in our shoe cupboard and then put the kids to bed. I’ve just got round to popping their eggs out for the morning and one of them is half eaten!

Would this be the work of a mouse? We have never ever had any other food in our garage. This is the first and only time. Does this mean the mouse must still be in our garage and if so, how would I get it out?

I’m also having a panic now that I could have carried the mouse (if it was a mouse) into the house in the bag 😩

Poor DD won’t get her Peter Rabbit egg in the morning.

Greedy mouse!

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 12/04/2020 00:14

Put a bit of the chewed egg in the cupboard tonight and see if it goes/is moved/chewed

jojobar · 12/04/2020 00:14

The specs do look like mice poo, they can be quite small. That mouse has had a chocolate banquet...he'll be in a sugar coma somewhere!

They do love chocolate, if you lay traps (humane or otherwise) a tip is to lace it with chocolate spread, as they go for that more than anything else.

Well at least you know what to bait the traps with. 💁🏻‍♀️

Muddlingalongalone · 12/04/2020 00:19

Bleurggghhhhh - I've just put an Easter egg hunt egg in the shed for the morning. 🤮🤮🤮🤮

Leflic · 12/04/2020 00:19

Mice.
Growing up we lived in an old farmhouse. My boyfriend came from Christmas ( separate rooms) and he put his chocolate on his bedside table. By morning all the chocolate coins had been nibbled. Literally next to his head😁 In their defence, it was a particularly cold Christmas.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/04/2020 00:21

Sorry to say but that looks like the work of a rat. They're getting bolder due to disruption to their usual food sources, I saw a huge one running along near the bins of a public building last time I was outside.

BillysMyBunny · 12/04/2020 00:32

Looks more likely to be a mouse than a rat to me. I think both the droppings and teeth marks look too small to be a rat (unless the photos are making it difficult to get a sense of scale).

Rat droppings are quite large (a bit smaller than a raisin) whereas mouse droppings are small (similar to sesame seeds). In my experience the tooth marks from a rats large front teeth also tend to be quite obvious - the marks on the egg look much smaller and less distinct which makes me think they’re more likely from a mouse.

EasterDisaster · 12/04/2020 00:34

The droppings are really small. I guess that’s a good sign. I’d much rather be dealing with a mouse here than a rat. If I left the garage door open, is there much chance the mouse would just go out? Especially since there’s nothing else edible in there? Or is that just wishful thinking 🙈

I would have said squirrel, but they would have shredded the cardboard packet too, definitely.

It's probably a mouse then.

IdblowJonSnow · 12/04/2020 00:40

Could be rat or mice. Cant tell. Mice frikkin love chocolate and rats will eat anything. In my old flat they used to come out of the cellar via a kitchen cupboard to gnaw on cardboard boxes. (Didnt realise for ages).
I'd bin the lot, they carry a lot of bacteria in their urine.

LadyEloise · 12/04/2020 00:50

Rats are incontinent and wee as they run or so I was told at the Natural History Museum tour in Ireland.
I'd be very careful and sanitise everything.

SpinMill · 12/04/2020 00:50

Ugh, sorry OP it's a horrible feeling. Have you got time to shove the Peter rabbit teddies through the washer with some disinfectant, have them dry for morning

TheTiaraManager · 12/04/2020 00:57

I would bin everything, it's not worth the risk. Hopefully you can get eggs tomorrow if not just get the girls chocolate

namechangenumber2 · 12/04/2020 00:57

I was about to suggest washing the teddies too. Sorry this has happened to you OP Sad

notangelinajolie · 12/04/2020 01:03

Oh no that's bad. Looks like mouse droppings - I think I would have to throw the lot away. I remember one Christmas years ago I hid selection boxes in our garage and found slug trails on one of them, I had to bin the lot Sad
Can your or your DH go out early tomorrow morning and try and replace them? I know there isn't likely to be any shops open on Easter Sunday, least of all during lockdown but a petrol station may be open. If not you can still do an Easter egg hunt - boil some eggs and wrap them in tin foil.

misscockerspaniel · 12/04/2020 01:04

I wouldn't leave the garage door open - his mates might join him for a party.

ChikiTIKI · 12/04/2020 01:05

You should still keep the bunny toys, put them in the wash tomorrow 😊 they don't take long to dry. We had our egg hunt yesterday and one of those bunnies ended up in the paddling pool. Dried easily before bed time.

Sorry this happened to you 😐
Apparently mice and rats are always passing through looking for food but only stay if they find some.

Tdaadfb100 · 12/04/2020 01:05

I had this in my bathmat once (not in the U.K. admittedly, thank God!)
Get a grip! 😂

Balmytissues · 12/04/2020 01:06

I wouldn't chance it I think. Have you anything else that you can get them?

DramaAlpaca · 12/04/2020 01:07

Well, the good news is that those are mouse droppings, not rat. Mice adore chocolate.

The bad news is that you're going to have to bin them all, mice leave wee everywhere.

StrongMama1989 · 12/04/2020 01:09

There’s a raaaat in my kitchen what am I gonna do

boatyardblues · 12/04/2020 01:09

How big is the hole in the front? It looks too small for a rat.

Rats and mice can collapse their ribcage to get through tiny spaces. The council pest control man told us pencil sized gap for a mouse and finger sized (man’s) for a rat.

EasterDisaster · 12/04/2020 01:12

I’ve decided to keep the eggs that are securely boxed up. I have thoroughly cleaned the packaging with anti bacterial wipes. I have put the teddies in the wash with disinfectant. I am now disinfecting downstairs to be on the safe side. My DD’s have had to deal with an awful lot recently and I just don’t want tomorrow to be another day of heartbreak. With all the other eggs being in a separate bag, with all the boxes looking immaculate and having thoroughly disinfected the packaging, I’d guess the risks must be minute.

Good news is - if you've got mice you don't have rats because rats scare off mice. Allegedly.

A bag I took to a wedding was accidentally put in our loft by builders. When I found it a year later mice or rats, can't remember which, had eaten half a chocolate bar, a lush bath bomb, the wedding order of service, but had left a packet of Percy pigs intact
