why does chocolate need a big 'vegetarian' sticker?

went out to buy easter chocolates yesterday.
specialist local sweet shop and chocolatier.
was bemused by the bright stickers.
just why? chocolate is always vegie isn't it?
I would understand that for vegan chocolate.

Some brands of chocolate use whey power, which can have rennet in it. Rennet comes from calves' stomachs.

Some colourings (eg cochineal) or fillings (gelatine) aren't veggie.

Very common misconception, you’d be surprised at the amount of foods with animal products in them.

I had no idea

I always thought chocolate is quite pure.

No forgetting the unethically sourced ingredients like palm oil.

no palm oil in the chocolate I bought.
only cocoa butter.
