Morning all

I desperately need to buy my 14 year old boy some shorts but am finding it difficult.

He has been wearing Gap combat style the last few years but he won't fit their biggest child size now. I think this age they can fall between the largest kids size and the smallest men's size.

Also he doesn't like Chino style or the green Combat print... that almost rules out everything I've seen.

I have seen one pair from Boden (attached) but would like to get another 1 or 2 pairs to carry him over in the summer. He likes the longer skater style as the pic attached.

I need to be slightly strategic on this as it's not so easy to return things at the moment!

Can you share your favourite brands please wise Mumsnetters?

Thanks xx Smile

I have a 14 year old as well and yes we have found he doesn't fit the kids sizes.

We have had to move to small mens which can be hard to get. Ive been in several shops that all said there is a gap in the market

Try M+M, you may find the odd big boys size or have a look for XS in mens

My similar aged Ds wears jersey ones like this. He had branded ones from JD Sports and non-logo ones from H&M

He's not owned clothes from Boden or Gap since primary school tbh so I'm guessing that he might have different taste to my son but his clothes are mainly from Boohoo, Primark, JD Sports and H&M. He favours a skinny jeans/joggers teamed with polo/T-shirt/hoodie sort of look.

Thanks @Oldraver and @nellythenarwhal

Good to know it's not just me! To be honest he is extremely disinterested in clothes most of the time so in the past I have just bought him stuff hence Gap etc.

He normally wears stuff from Zara, H&M but the sizes are not big enough any more.

I'm just trying to find plainish styles (like the Boden ones attached) so am looking everywhere!! Thanks for helping! Smile

Same problem here. Plus ds is in his growth spurt, so I really don't want to spend ££££ on things that won't fit him next month! Matalan could be suitable https://www.matalan.co.uk/mens/shorts?facetfilter%5Bminncurrentprice%5D%5Bgte%5D=8.0&facettfilter%5Bmincurrenttprice%5D%5Blte%5D=22.0&per=36&sort=priceasc

H&M men's XS waist size is the same as the age 13/14 boys I think.

Blownaway22 · 11/04/2020 09:41

I don’t know whether they are still open or how sizing compares to other brands, but Surfdome do up to 16yrs. Also Marks 15-16 are fairly generous sizing.

Dilbertian · 11/04/2020 09:41

My snake-hipped, average-height adult ds wears men's size S from Primark and H&M, or XS in more generously cut styles. His little brother is now taller and slightly wider than him, so I'd try S or M, depending on style.

BikeRunSki · 11/04/2020 09:53

Animal do board shorts up to age 15/16.

pumpkinpie01 · 11/04/2020 09:54

Sports direct , lots of choice there. Could buy a men's small size

DobbinEweInn · 11/04/2020 09:59

Have a look at Pull & Bear

Thanks for all the responses!!

I've just been looking at Superdry (bargain basement version on EBay) 😬.

Does anybody know if their XS or S size would be comparable?

H&M's smallest adult size should be ok, I'm sure that's mostly where we got DS1's clothes at that awkward in between age!

Dilbertian · 11/04/2020 10:44

I just measured ds: 31" hips and a smidgin under 6' tall. There's not a scrap of chub on him. I've ordered a couple of pairs of size 32" shorts from Matalan.

Biscuitsneeded · 11/04/2020 10:47

Sports shops are you best cheaper bet - otherwise if you feel like spending more Hollister do XS sizes that ft my slim and smallish 15 year old (5 foot 5 and slim build).

TSSDNCOP · 11/04/2020 14:26

XS Superdry men, but the S will give him room to gore

FudgeBrownie2019 · 11/04/2020 14:29

DS1 is 14 and 6 foot 3 but super skinny. H&M and la Redoute's mens clothes run quite slim so seem to suit him well.

SmellbowSmellbow123 · 11/04/2020 14:33

I was just looking at shorts today for my 14yr old son. TU have a good selection and I think I may have order some from there.

Hi All

Thanks so much for your responses, I appreciate the help.

I've bought a few pairs of shorts from Superdry size Small, fingers crossed they fit!! I measured him at a 30" waist so I'll post an update..

Happy Easter Smile
