So... I want to make bread

Cos I'm stuck home alone bored...

Simples according to JO, flour+yeast+water = bread!

I managed (I know! Stealth boast right?! So bear with..!) to get hold of some flour! Whoppee!

After a trip to Sainsbury's this evening hunting for yeast (amongst other things 🙄) to discover that yeast and the 50,000 types of flour sold at Sainsbury's has become the latest panic buy ... and is now sold out 🙄🙄

So, bread foiled for now .... Needed my aforementioned already purchased flour to thicken a sauce for dinner. Got it out the cupboard and ...

It's self raising! For "use making cakes and biscuits" I don't want to make cake and biscuits! I want to make bread!! 😭

So wise MNs, can you use self raising flour to make bread? Honestly feel I might cry 🙊😳🙄😂

I don't think it'd work

wildthingsinthenight · 10/04/2020 23:23

Yes and you can use just beer flour and sugar to get a decent loaf if you can't get hold of yeast.
Google beer bread. Good luck!

has become the latest panic buy

The 1st thing to sell out- weeks ago. Coming back into shops now.

If you make Irish soda bread it's very very easy, don't even need yeast. I made some this week delicious. X

Don't do it! I made bread last week. Was awful, threw it out today Grin

duckme · 10/04/2020 23:34

Ooh, I love my old Be Ro book. There is an orange and raisin loaf in there which doesn't need eggs! This was most welcome when eggs were the hot item

EngagedAgain · 10/04/2020 23:41

I've not made bread as such, often thought about it purely to have decent bread with some flavour. I don't know if it's just me but even bakery bread just doesn't seem the same anymore. Used to make my own pizzas at one time.

Made some and had to smother it in butter/ jam each time to eat it. Awful!!!

Ionacat · 11/04/2020 07:55

Jamie Oliver has a really easy flatbread recipe which uses self raising flour and natural yogurt.

Coldhandscoldheart · 11/04/2020 07:59

Isn’t this how you usually eat bread?

SerendipitySunshine · 11/04/2020 08:05

We bake all our own bread and everyone buying flour and yeast on the offchance they want to try baking has meant there's none to buy in shops. Please only buy what you need.
