Can you get a virus from opening a Facebook message?

I don’t mean by clicking on a link within the message, I mean by just opening the message itself.

no. If that is the Fabrizio wotsit one, it has been going round since 2009. If you get one of these suspicious messages, google should point you at snopes.com or similar and all will be explained.

I was think they can't really think that can they.

As for you question my instinct says no but I wouldn't want to trust me as I'm not an expert and I'd suggest doing a Google to check.
