Town with less than a 40 minute London commute

Hi all,

DH is about to accept a new job and it's highly likely we will move next Summer.

We'd like to be within a 20 minute walk of a small to medium sized town, and able to get into London in 30 to 40 minutes. A decent 6th form within a reasonable distance is important too.

I realise the world is on it's arse at the moment, but this research is a good distraction!

Any suggestions please?

@tontie - that's a bit mysterious. Which places would you suggest not to look at and why?

I would look at Essex/Suffolk/Cambs or anywhere connecting onto the jubilee line...

Croydon, Purley, Sutton distances from stations, shopping centres, etc. There's nothing wrong them but the op has a healthy budget & likes Guildford & I don't think they are similar.

Bishops Stortford, Sawbridgeworth and the local villages. Easy run into Liverpool Street and onwards. Good schools, nice area. Airport within easy reach.

The Ipswich/ Norwich line out of Liverpool Street stops at Stratford for the DLR to Canary Wharf. Chelmsford would just about be within your travel requirements, Colchester is around 1 hr away.

I'm familiar with Farnborough college as it's a popular choice from Farnham where we have several friends.

To be worthwhile moving any train journey into London needs to be under 40 minutes ideally.

Yes Crossrail will likely open up some other opportunities. Someone also mentioned Twyford (Berkshire).
