Why was it decided that Susan was lazy?

So I’m cleaning my kitchen and came across my Lazy Susan. Got me wondering why the inventor called it Lazy Susan instead of, lazy Lucy, lazy Lucinda, lazy Jane, lazy Barbara.... I could go on for a while. I know I could probably google and find out the answer but I’m quite enjoying thinking of poor Susan and her dismay when she found out it was named after her. Also enjoying thinking up alternative names, a bit too much time on my hands.

There's a bit of assonance(?) to the name, which is pleasing to the ear.
Susan was presumably a 'servant' name at the time?

maybe the inventor had a wife called susan who was a slattern in the housework department

It's a Dizzy Lizzy in our house due to me forgetting what it was called when I was about 10! I remembered it had a girls name in it and it spun so.... Grin

Dizzy Lizzy is much better 😂
I bet Susan hoped the invention wouldn’t take off.
So many scenarios going on in my head about who Susan was.

i have one
when my uncle gave it to me he called it lazy myname lol

Enko · 09/04/2020 11:28

Some information here op suggests that it was named after the inventor's daughter.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/04/2020 11:28

How about Susan thought it up? If so I hope she scooped a lot of money for it.

libertyminty · 09/04/2020 11:32

Thanks Enko. Ahh yes maybe Susan named it after herself. In my imagination it was two sisters, named Susan and Agatha. Agatha got fed up with Susan not pulling her weight, so invented it and called it Lazy Susan to make a point.

Two sisters, OP? Would that be a bit like Mary and Martha in the bible? Grin

I had this exact conversation with my husband the other day. We decided it went a bit like this:

Susan: wouldn’t it be great if we had a thing on the table that spun round so you could get things without having to reach for them?

Inventor: Don’t be so lazy, Susan.

I imagine she was a teacher. Lazy good for nothings, they all are.
