I used to go around the village where I used to live with my notebook and pen and write down number plates. I can still recall my Dad's car plate.

This is a cause of much mirth to my kids who have clearly never known the heady excitement of a long sunday afternoon pre internet days.

I used to stick felt pieces on a board with glue - birds, flowers etc. You know, like a pre done design?

Wish I’d done something useful like ballet or a musical instrument or art.

My mother kept all those things too, they’re still some hanging in her house!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/04/2020 01:10

Yes! I'm still the proud owner of a set of dragon pics made out of felt pieces.

Using a typewriter to make pictures.
Also typing imaginary class registers.

LilacTree1 · 07/04/2020 01:14

“ Using a typewriter to make pictures.”

Those would sell well now!

DottyWott · 07/04/2020 01:15

I collected live caterpillars in a jar

Pomegranatemolasses · 07/04/2020 01:16

Gosh this is so funny! I distinctly remember my cousins having sculptures made of matchsticks, also random nail 3d pictures.

I remember a thread here many years ago, where the op visited a home, picked up one of those 'nails' type sculptures and the whole thing disassembled. The family got incredibly angry because it was the image of a deceased family member.

ElizabethMainwaring · 07/04/2020 01:16

Thank you! I wish I had a typewriter now!
Also making 'perfume' out of flowers. It always went really manky. I think we all did that, didn't we.

wendywoopywoo222 · 07/04/2020 01:17

I was a member of the young ornithologists and used to draw a detailed picture of the garden marked with all the birds nests I could find, details of how many eggs, dates hatched, dates the babies flew away etc etc. All kept neatly in my notebook.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 07/04/2020 01:23

I collected little pig ornaments. I didn’t even much like pigs. I think my mum started it because my friend was collecting beanie babies and I wanted to as well but they were £££ Grin so this was my collection. I had hundreds of them. My dad put up shelves in my room to hold them all. No idea where they all went, or even when. Don’t care either. Grin

TheCatBar · 07/04/2020 01:26

Collecting fragranced erasers.
Go to estate agents and collect house details and copy type them on my petite typewriter.
Take pictures of random weddings at the local church with my Kodak instamatic camera.
I was a weird kid!

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 07/04/2020 01:32

Oh when we went on holiday (in the car) I would sit with a jotter/piece of paper and hold my pen loosely and let the cars movement move the pen while I gazed out the window for as long as possible. If I didn’t like the outcome when I glanced down I had to start afresh with a new page. Hmm

BerryPieandCustard · 07/04/2020 01:47

I used to collect hedgehog 🦔 ornaments and trinkets... I still have a few old faves! I had a navy sweatshirt with hedgehogs and a woodland scene on the front and a hedgehog writing set with hedgehog printed paper and envelopes.

I also used to pretend to have a hotel or B and B and make lists from the Argos book or some of my mums catalogs with page numbers/catalog numbers/descriptions/prices of the things I would have in each room and for the dining room, each room would have different themes, different numbers of rooms each time to mix things up!

The absolute best time of year would be when the new catalogs arrived in the post as A) there was loads of new things in it to include in my game and B) I was allowed the old catalogs to cut up and make a visual list of my fave room designs!

I was a bit of an odd child!

ElizabethMainwaring · 07/04/2020 01:51

Berry pie, that B & B game sounds brilliant!
I wish I had been your friend!

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 07/04/2020 01:53

Absolutely love that one, so oddball.

I used to like weaving with sticks. It was so fucking pointless. What do you do with a length of scratchy wool formed from being wound repetitively around five sticks?

Thanks for this thread. Awake feeling anxious!

livingmyslothlife · 07/04/2020 01:54

Another one who used to collect he papers from Estate Agents and type up the details. I also added pretend viewings to a diary and had imaginary phone calls with the vendors. It was my dream job. I ended up working for years in conveyancing so close.

ElizabethMainwaring · 07/04/2020 01:58

Thought of another one.
Collected the little cards with paint colours on from B&Q, or whatever the late 70s equivalent was.

Charley50 · 07/04/2020 02:00

I used to collect matchboxes. And smelly rubbers.
I also used to have I-spy books and would go around filling them in, then send them to Big Chief Pow-Wow and get a certificate sent to me.
I used to collect Wades Whimseys.
Me and my friend Samantha, whose dad ran a Threshers off-license, had our own world called Jabberwocky (we thought we made the word up) and language with maps, and own words.
I was in the Professionals fan club, (when I was older).

Joywillcomeagain · 07/04/2020 02:00

I used to collect snails in our local gully. My parents gave me a fish tank to keep them in. I loved them and was heart broken with guilt when it rained the tank filled with water and they all drowned Blush

Tillygetsit · 07/04/2020 02:23

My best friend Vivienne and I used to make up surveys and grill all the neighbours, writing everything down. We thought we'd uncover a murderer this way Confused

SwerfandTurf · 07/04/2020 02:25

My mum got me a flower pressing kit once.

That was a boring summer.

subcentro · 07/04/2020 02:31

I was a member of the Knitterbugs Club. I had to knit stuff, then take it into a wool shop to get it verified or something, then I’d get a certificate I think. I hated knitting, I didn’t get very far.

cheesenmarmite · 07/04/2020 02:34

Oh when we went on holiday (in the car) I would sit with a jotter/piece of paper and hold my pen loosely and let the cars movement move the pen

I did that Blush
Plus collected wade whimsy's and leather bookmarks, my parents binned them in the end.

teainthetardis · 07/04/2020 02:35

These are amazing!

I collected spiders in matchboxes. Weird kid

subcentro · 07/04/2020 02:37

I’ve just googled to make sure I didn’t imagine this as it sounds a bit implausible. But I’ve found a blog where someone has obviously found my discarded Knitterbug @Knitterbag Grin

Lalala205 · 07/04/2020 02:41

I collected soaps... Not fancy pants ones, just random bars 😳 I also had a kick ass thimble collection. I feel I might have been a rather boring child.
