Supermarket Staff Come and talk about your day

I've had a day that went from pretty cheerful and positive-the walk to work was lovely, the birds were singing, early on my colleagues and I were able to re-stock the shelves pretty much undisturbed because it was quiet, we had a few laughs, the customers are on the whole sensible, polite, patient and appreciative.
To
Stressful and confrontational- Customer refusing to step back from the till, getting stroppy over being asked to try and use cards at manned tills,
insisting on packing their own bag as the shopping is run through meaning they are about a foot away (yes we have sneeze barriers but it still feels wrong), trying to subvert the one way system.
Plus we still have to pass customers and colleagues within about a metre and a half in order to get stock out or go and retrieve click and collect items.
Plus behind the kiosk you have to pass colleagues very closely to get anything from the opposite side.
I am so stressed by the end of my shift.

I do wish people would be more considerate.

The woman manning the check out I was at earlier was very upset as the previous customer had stood very close and was rude when she asked him to move to the end of the checkout to pack his bags. He told her Corona was 'a load of shit'.

Another huge thank you from me OP. Hope you enjoy your gin Flowers

Another non-supermarket worker popping on to say a huge thanks to all of you for keeping the show on the road. Supermarkets near me have been brilliantly organised, you're all doing a great job.

Optimistic54 · 06/04/2020 19:07

I work on checkout with no perspex barrier. I've had people stand right in front of me or just where the payment card machine is. I was getting so on edge last week I was asking them politely to please pack their shopping at the end of the checkout. I don't think that's even 2 metres from me but I just wanted them as far away as possible. Most people were obliging but I also got looks as if I was mad. Why do they not just stand as far away from me anyway for their sake as well as mine, do they not watch or read the news. I'm back in again from tomorrow and I will keep saying it whether they like it or not.

PurpleBlueAnemone · 06/04/2020 19:08

Thanks all. The staff must all be either still manning those tills and scanning through the scratchcard, two packets of brioche and a curly wurly or having a wine and a sit down.

I watched a customer pass a used tissue to the checkout lady at Sainsbury’s today. “Have you got a bin” she said. As she passed it over she said “the worlds gone mad”. I really feel for anyone working hard in shop right now having to deal such inconsiderate people.

Catnuzzle · 06/04/2020 19:24

A massive thank you to you all from me too. Flowers

I work in a supermarket. Moved the start of my shift from 5am to 3am in an effort to spend less time around customers, enabling us to fill faster. But from 6am when we open until I finish, it's so difficult.

I'm polite, I step out of the customers way if i see them, and my job takes five times longer but so many walk straight up to us to ask something, tap us on the shoulder or lean over us Confused We have all wondered if we're becoming invisible!

On the flip side, so many lovely customers have thanked us, given us compliments and words of encouragement, so thank you to those customers Flowers

GetTheStartyParted · 06/04/2020 19:27

And now I'm off to bed. I only see my DH for 2 hours a day on work days now.

It's a small part to play in what we as a country are going through though. I'm happy to do it, most of the time. Hope you have a better day tomorrow @PurpleBlueAnemone

Some people really are vile and inconsiderate aren't they? You are doing an amazing job and the majority of people, I imagine really appreciate the work you are doing. Are you allowed to wear a mask and gloves? Can your supermarket not put signs up telling people where to stand.
How about closing for an hour at lunch time, giving you time to restock shelves.

PurpleBlueAnemone · 06/04/2020 19:57

Have a good kip GetTheStartyParted
I agree that lots of, in fact most customers are lovely and there's a real feeling of we're all in this together. Customer at self checkout today witnessing one rude encounter said 'you don't deserve this and thank you very much for being here' which is the sort of thing which makes the eyes inexplicably moist(sorry for the M word)

I just wanted to say thank you and to every other key worker. Your doing a brilliant job.

Ghostlyglow · 06/04/2020 21:10

My DP spent a few years working in a supermarket before he retired. He said he encountered pretty special kinds of stupid then, not to mention outright bad manners and rudeness from customers.
Thankyou to you and all supermarket staff. You are so unappreciated Flowers

Millie2013 · 06/04/2020 21:13

I’ve encountered some flipping lovely supermarket staff this past couple of weeks.

Thank you all Flowers

KitKatKit · 06/04/2020 21:15

A thank you to you all for keeping us fed. Your sacrifices aren't going unnoticed Flowers

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 06/04/2020 21:16

Thank you all from me too.

I have always been met with a friendly smile and chat during this. I do shopping for folk at the end of my own shifts and I take my hat off to you all for keeping us all ticking Flowers

ViolaTricolora · 06/04/2020 21:41

If you look at them, people kindly move away as far as possible. But if you don't look at them, because you're looking at the shelves you're filling, you suddenly turn into furniture. And there's no need to give room to furniture. It's almost magical, if it wasn't so scary

Robin233 · 06/04/2020 21:43

I did 12 years in the checkouts
Mostly good Times
Can only imagine working through this.
A big thank you to you all Thanks

ACertainSupermarket · 06/04/2020 21:47

It's HORRIBLE. Most people have no concept of 6m. I'm not even sure the shelves are 6m apart! Even though we have a one-way system, people just overtake within breathing distance. (Have you noticed, by the way, that the guidance has now moved on from risk of virus in 'coughing' to 'exhalation'?)
It's absolutely impossible to social distance. This is the only place you're more likely to catch covid than a hospital, at the moment, yet people still teem in.
I go home, strip off in the porch and have a shower before I touch anything.

MasterMargarita · 06/04/2020 21:59

It's 6ft or 2m, not 6m

PurpleBlueAnemone · 06/04/2020 22:01

ACertainSupermarket I'm getting into my house via back door, strip uniform straight into machine, leave shoes just inside back door, wash hands, wipe down any shopping, head for shower then on return wipe down any surfaces I've missed.
Then and only then feel a bit relaxed.

PurpleBlueAnemone · 06/04/2020 22:02

No way are our shelves 2m apart.

It's 6ft or 2m, not 6m oops, long day (or wishful thinking maybe!)
