Supermarket Staff Come and talk about your day

I've had a day that went from pretty cheerful and positive-the walk to work was lovely, the birds were singing, early on my colleagues and I were able to re-stock the shelves pretty much undisturbed because it was quiet, we had a few laughs, the customers are on the whole sensible, polite, patient and appreciative.
To
Stressful and confrontational- Customer refusing to step back from the till, getting stroppy over being asked to try and use cards at manned tills,
insisting on packing their own bag as the shopping is run through meaning they are about a foot away (yes we have sneeze barriers but it still feels wrong), trying to subvert the one way system.
Plus we still have to pass customers and colleagues within about a metre and a half in order to get stock out or go and retrieve click and collect items.
Plus behind the kiosk you have to pass colleagues very closely to get anything from the opposite side.
I am so stressed by the end of my shift.

All praise for our management though, they are providing gloves, masks and hand gel.
I never imagined that we'd wear face masks in public in the uk!

Mynydd · 06/04/2020 22:08

Thank you for enabling me to feed my family Flowers

PurpleBlueAnemone · 06/04/2020 22:09

Yes we have masks, gloves and gel. They are there if individuals feel they want them.
IMO gloves and masks do nothing and I don't think anyone in my store is actually using them atm. I was watching yesterday to see whether a decision was made that masks were effective or not. Don't think I caught a result yet?

@PurpleBlueAnemone are you allowed to wear face masks on the shop floor?

Thank you for everything you do. I have to go to the Supermarket tomorrow, the first time in 3 weeks as we are running low and online shopping has been impossible. I'm also shopping for an elderly neighbour. I'm planning to get there as soon as it opens and leave within 30mins if possible.

Being around members of the public for hours must be so stress inducing. You are amazing.

Eastie77 · 06/04/2020 22:12

Sorry, Cross post - ignore my question!

soupmaker · 06/04/2020 22:15

Massive thank you to supermarket staff. I was so anxious heading to my local one at the weekend. But there was hand sanitizer, wipes for the trolleys, lovely member of staff making sure the queue behaved, patient lovely checkout staff. I just hope people remember how important you all are once this is over.

PurpleBlueAnemone · 06/04/2020 22:21

Eastie77 if your local store is anything like my work it will be quiet that early. It's all pretty normal really. Try not to stress too much about it and realise that staff may need to pass you in the aisles. You might need to wait for others to move around the store but that's fine. We have had a lot of stuff back in stock over the last week but still no anti bac hand wash, anti bac wipes or Dettol. If you're after pasta or tinned tomatoes or beans you could be lucky. Try and have a list which follows the route of the store as it's hard to back track. Conversely please don't loiter, examine goods and put them back or witter over which brand to get.

Supermarket staff are bloody fantastic. Flowers

Cherrysherbet · 06/04/2020 22:34

Supermarket worker here. It was quite disturbing today to have a man come and stand right next to me, and remove his face mask to have a cough into his hand.

I am feeling more and more uncomfortable with the situation at work. It is impossible for us to follow the government advice, and I don’t have any choice but to go to work.

JediJim · 06/04/2020 22:35

Was in Tesco yesterday, they have the one way arrows to follow. Aisles all one way. There was a Tesco worker who’s job was obviously to police this and keep an eye on customer. She got some verbal abuse from one young man who accused her of being anal because she asked him to follow the arrows.
I hope she got him thrown out, I didn’t catch the full argument. Too many tossers out there who do what they want.

AnonymityIsGreat · 06/04/2020 22:39

Anybody else working somewhere really overstaffed?

Where I work isn't online or click and collect so with half the tills and all the open food areas closed, there are way too many staff replenishing and working on top of each other. Most of them have never replenished before so they're creating a huge amount of congestion while standing trying to find products. Then we have a couple of hours at the end of every day of people hanging around chatting because there isn't enough work for the number of people.

I feel like a dick complaining about too many staff when I know some places are manic but the complete lack of social distancing amongst staff is really stressing me out.

moolady1977 · 06/04/2020 22:42

A huge thankyou to all the shop workers ,my parents are both having to isolate and they are very lucky that on their street are two friends of mine who work in different supermarkets and they both pick them up anything they need which I'm extremely grateful for and have told my parents when this is over I'll be getting them both a bottle of something and some flowers/chocolates to say thankyou

LilacTree1 · 06/04/2020 22:43

I’ve managed to avoid supermarkets but thank you for working OP.

I don’t have a mask, I should try to make one before I go.

sorrelli · 06/04/2020 22:45

Thank you for all you’re doing Flowers

sorrelli · 06/04/2020 22:46

@Cherrysherbet

That’s disgraceful, so sorry to hear that Flowers

scalliondays · 06/04/2020 22:47

I'm pharmacy staff so sympathise. You're doing a really important job so thank you.

willowmelangell · 06/04/2020 22:47

I work in a supermarket. I've been thinking, if baskets were all removed and everybody had to use a trolley then we would all be a trolley distance from each other.
I now do my work pushing a trolley in front of me. I echo what others have said about trying to work and not passing close to customers. So difficult.

ssd · 06/04/2020 22:48

What do you all do when you come home from work, do you go straight in the shower?

dandymottahs · 06/04/2020 22:54

Retail worker here. My day was ok. I was doing something away from customers today which was a nice change.

Do you all feel it's for sure we will get this virus? Or do we still have a chance of not getting it?

Chloemol · 06/04/2020 22:54

I would like to thank all shop and pharmacy staff. I think you all do a great job, in very difficult circumstances, and firmly believe there is no reason for anyone to be rude to you.

ssd · 06/04/2020 22:57

@dandymottahs, it's awful you feel you might for sure get this virus.

Starlight1243 · 06/04/2020 22:57

I went to tesco today and the staff were great making sure people kept their distance and following the arrows. I witness a woman complaining about the lack of food to staff literally following her to the next aisle seeing shes having to go to various shops every day. I called her out and told the staff are doing there best to replace everything on the shifts and she was showing herself up for going on at them like that. There was plenty of the shells that I was able to get my normal shop theres literally no pleasing people but I thanked the staff and told them we appreciate them getting the food out for everyone.

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/04/2020 22:57

Thank you purple. Your post made me laugh, I am doing my shopping list on the way you walk round the shop.
I wonder if we all do that can you guess where I shop ?
My list starts with t bags, peanut butter, biscuits, bread
Thanks to all shop workers, and all key workers GinFlowers

ssd · 06/04/2020 22:58
