I've had a day that went from pretty cheerful and positive-the walk to work was lovely, the birds were singing, early on my colleagues and I were able to re-stock the shelves pretty much undisturbed because it was quiet, we had a few laughs, the customers are on the whole sensible, polite, patient and appreciative.
To
Stressful and confrontational- Customer refusing to step back from the till, getting stroppy over being asked to try and use cards at manned tills,
insisting on packing their own bag as the shopping is run through meaning they are about a foot away (yes we have sneeze barriers but it still feels wrong), trying to subvert the one way system.
Plus we still have to pass customers and colleagues within about a metre and a half in order to get stock out or go and retrieve click and collect items.
Plus behind the kiosk you have to pass colleagues very closely to get anything from the opposite side.
I am so stressed by the end of my shift.

@Eastie77 I'd advise you not to go when it opens, it's busier then as the stockpilers and panickers tend to queue outside at opening time. Later in the day is better and we get deliveries throughout the day anyway!

I get so angry reading threads like this! How can anyone either doubt COVID is high risk or not follow the safety rules!?

A massive thank you from me to all retail staff on here. I worked in retail through school and university, now in a different but still customer facing industry. Some of the general public are lovely, some are rude as they're having a bad day, others are horrid people. It's the latter two that are a nightmare and have no right to speak to humans as they do

Thank you and keep safe. Remember common sense and public health are on your side. So challenge customers/colleagues/managers etc that are not keeping you safe WineThanksStarHaloGin

Thank you OP Flowers

MovingBriskyOn · 06/04/2020 23:28

Big thanks and 💐 from me to all retail staff too.

Can I ask, is there a sensible time to shop? Are you experiencing quieter times or days, or is it bonkers every minute you're open atm?

dandy I’m in a supermarket, dp is in a bank. We very much feel it’s a case of when and not if one of us will get it. It’s depressing and scary.

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/04/2020 23:40

Ssd I actually shop in Aldi, but I still thank everyone who works in a supermarket Gin Flowers

Gingaaarghpussy · 06/04/2020 23:43

I cant face supermarkets because of my mh issues, I have shop very close to me that serves my purpose. The staff are an awesome bunch, although the youngsters are not as virus conscious as the older ones. They have a no more than 4 people at a time policy and stand here dots on the floor.
I've been going to this shop for nearly 10 years and I'm hoping they dont shut.
All shop staff in front line positions should have proper protection, no matter the size of the store. I am in awe of how brave people are.
Thankyou so much for making my life simpler.

Retail/office worker, l have come out of my office to support the store l support at Christmas and do trading exercises in and what not. I just thought l can’t go and work from home when a team l feel a bond with really need me.

I had a nice day, l had to be nice to a lady who only just on Saturday made a social media post about the store and then backed of when people called her out on what she had written, my colleague she named was extra nice to her, l don’t know how.l made a lady smile as l had kept a plant l knew she wanted when they were delivered onSaturday. I dropped 3 lots of shopping off for elderly customers who can’t come out and couldn’t get a delivery slot.l got hone got showered and hugged my children tighter.

Tomorrow there is a funeral of one of our very lovely customers and because it is a small store, lovely community we are going to close so as we the car goes by we can show our respect and a few of us will watch via web cam. Then we will still have to deal with all the customers who wont be happy we stoped for a while.

Strangebrew · 07/04/2020 00:08

It's been horrible, very sad to see my colleagues so stressed after the abuse we have had from customers and the lack of ppe available for us to us. It is exhausting to have to go to work in an environment where it is highly likely that we are being exposed to Covid as so little social distancing happens.

I hate it. I hate being there I don't feel safe, It makes me feel sick with dread and the fear that I will get it and pass it on to my family makes me wish that I didn't have to go to work in my supermarket at all.

PurpleBlueAnemone · 07/04/2020 06:25

I'm off to do another eight hour shift. Looking forward to hearing all the bird song along the walk in.
Stay safe everyone.

A huge thank you to all of you - you are amazing 💐

MovingBriskyOn · 07/04/2020 08:01

Good luck to all of you who are working today. Flowers

aibutohavethisusername · 07/04/2020 09:05

I’m working on the shop floor now. Was in Travel Money. Some customers are so rude and ignorant. Many ignore the social distancing rules.

ssd · 07/04/2020 09:34

It amazes me hiw people ignore the social distancing rules.
How can they be so ignorant?

Knowivedonewrong · 07/04/2020 10:31

I've worked checkouts and night shift at Sainsbury's.
Never again!
I take my hat off to those of you who do work in the supermarkets. Thank you for everything you do.

Undercoverworker06 · 07/04/2020 12:28

I'm working in a supermarket on the tills. Mostly people are ok, tho I had one woman get a bit snippy when I refused to touch her bags to pack her shopping. Now a lot of the restrictions are gone on what you can buy people are a bit better but omg when there was restrictions on milk and bread!
I'm pretty fatalistic about it tbh, either I'll get it or I won't but a lot of staff are very anxious, but they were anxious people in the first place, iyswim? That's not a criticism btw. Everyone deals with it in their own way.

Itstheprinciple · 07/04/2020 14:04

I'm just back from Morrisons, every body very civilised I'm glad to say. Had a nice chat with the checkout operator and everyone was respectful of each other's personal space, staff and customers, that I could see. Hopefully your day has been full of similar experiences. And thank you.

PurpleBlueAnemone · 07/04/2020 17:41

Today was much more chilled. Hallelujah.
I'm fatalistic too but I'm still doing my damnedest to be CV free for as long as possible and not spread it to anyone.

My other half works in a small convenience supermarket, he says it's insanely busy.

If he gets sick I will never forgive myself for not stopping him from going to work.

Onlyherefortheconspiracies · 07/04/2020 23:06

Hellish shift! Got called a cheeky cunt by a vagrant. He was making my customers feel even more anxious than they need to. Police called twice during my (short) shift
