Breadmaker

It looks like I am very late to the party but has anyone bought a breadmaker in the last few days/week?

I've checked currys, Lakeland, Amazon, ebay, AO, Argos but all sold out!

I'm not sure there will be any bread flour in the shop either...but if anyone had luck finding a machine please can you tell me where from?

Thanks!

Some of these suggestions may be out of date now, but if you’ve landed here looking for bread makers, we’ve recently updated our best bread maker page with loads of great options you can buy now that are loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Smile

I used to have a breadmaker (a Panasonic as it happens) but when it eventually died I replaced it with a stand mixer. The mixer does the kneading and I shape it into rolls, tin loaves or whatever I want.

Good luck with hunting one down, in normal times I'd suggest the BHF charity shop but of course these are not normal times.

MulticolourMophead · 06/04/2020 15:43

I need a link to a fool proof sourdough starter recipe.

sueelleker · 06/04/2020 15:53

I made this recipe when my DH was on a yeast-free diet. You don't have to glaze it if you want it as ordinary bread. www.ohbiteit.com/2013/12/greek-yogurt-bread-2-ingredients.html

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/04/2020 15:56

Panasonic is great. I got mine for £5 on FB marketplace.

However, now is not a good time. Can't get flour anywhere.

guessmyusername · 06/04/2020 16:03

I have a Panasonic. My family love the bread made in it. It doesn't last long enough for the bread to go stale or mouldy! I have been experimenting with seeds and today put pumpkin seeds in a loaf. It will be the last one as I cannot find yeast in the shops!

MrsDrudge · 06/04/2020 16:05

I think my Panasonic is great. Set it on timer and wake to freshly baked bread every morning. No yeast to be had anywhere atm though!

JewelTheft · 06/04/2020 16:09

Another vote for the Panasonic (when there's any available again). I can and do sometimes make bread by hand too, but the convenience of them is great, the bread is delicious and, like a PP, it never stays around long enough to go mouldy.

Mintjulia · 06/04/2020 16:26

I've made bread by hand every three days since this began. The first time took me three hours, now I've got it down to 30 mins effort, 1hr rising and 45 mins in the oven. It gets easier quickly.

20 mins kneading provides a good workout for the arms. Smile

Now I've run out of yeast so having a go at growing my own.

I've been using the no-knead technique for years with great results. You don't need a breadmaker, you only need a pinch of yeast and as the name suggests there is no kneading at all. You have to wait at least overnight to proof the dough but the actual work involved is maybe ten minutes in total.

The only equipment required is a heavy casserole pot for the baking. You can also do the baking with a pizza stone or, even better, a pizza steel.

The result is the sort of crusty, chewy, artisan looking bread that you never thought you could make in your own kitchen.

There are tons of recipes and videos online (search for no knead bread) but the basic principle is to use a ratio of 70% water to flour and a tiny amount of yeast.

The bread is cooked inside the casserole pot which has to be preheated in your oven as hot as it will go for at least half an hour to transfer as much heat to the bread as possible.

If you can get your hands on bread flour and dried yeast then have a go, you'll be amazed!

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 06/04/2020 17:22

I was thinking breadmaker because it will save us going to the shops so often now but also to put on overnight for packed lunches in the future...I know I am making work for myself though.

Also, there is a strong possibility a year from now lots of these breadmakers will be sold on ebay.

...but I have yeast in the cupboard and my local tesco has bread flour in stock 😱

Not to mention I am the most impatient person ever.

Hmmm, decisions decisions.

I have a Panasonic which I got from eBay for £7.99. Total bargain.

Thankfully we've had a rolling stock of flour and yeast due to our Brexit stash, so we're going great guns for now!

The bread doesn't last long enough to go mouldy; we eat it in a couple of days.

I prefer using the breadmaker since tearing my shoulder tendon. I can't knead like I used to. And, like a PP says, I don't make bread overnight so I've a fresh loaf waiting for me when I get up. It's worth it for the timer function alone!

nannykatherine · 13/04/2020 17:25

you can make great bread in a slow cooker

altiara · 13/04/2020 17:55

I’ve got a kenwood bread maker, I even got it out of the cupboard! but no bread flour or any flour to be seen in the local shops to me.
(The only reason it stays in the cupboard is because I get addicted to warm homemade bread and have to hide it away again after a week!)

Pennycrown · 13/04/2020 18:56

I have one sitting in my cupboard. Used it once.... just dont have time. Depending where you are, you are more than welcome to it.

Barrique · 13/04/2020 19:15

The Panasonic makes very good pizza base (I make it with a mix of white and wholemeal bread flour).

The Clever Carrot website has a good sourdough starter recipe and no-knead recipes.

Castieldeansam · 13/04/2020 19:45

If you can get strong bread flour but no yeast, you can get fresh yeast from the supermarket bakeries, usually for free.

Bouncingbomb · 13/04/2020 19:49

I have got the Panasonic bread maker and a Kenwood Chef. I always make normal bread in the bread maker, honey and sunflower seed with 50 granary 50 white flour is my favourite but DD prefers the french bread option..

I make special bread with the kenwood, focaccia, weekend treat type bread.

So they are two different things for me. I am still working full time so still using my bread maker - more than usual as we are at home.

Tesco and Ocado are still delivering bread flour.

DramaAlpaca · 13/04/2020 19:53

I tried to get a breadmaker just before all this kicked off. Had one in an online basket, but hesitated for a day too long and by then it was sold out and I haven't been able to find the one I want anywhere. I guess it doesn't matter though as I can't find bread flour anywhere.

Jellycatfox · 13/04/2020 19:58

I have a bread maker. Not Panasonic, I can’t remember now and it is downstairs.
I use it a lot. The bread is not as the bread back home from the bakery but better than the bread I would buy here.
I love that I can put the ingredients in and get on with life, or do the delay start and do it overnight.
I play with different flours (as flour is so hard to find) and seeds and make brioche and pizza dough.
I have small children so I can’t be making it by hand.
It doesn’t make amazing bread but it makes nice bread easily.
And jam apparently

GCAcademic · 13/04/2020 20:04

I got rid of mine. I didnt like the bread it turned out. Buying a Kenwood Chef was a much better investment. I use it to make the dough the night before and do the second prove overnight so I can bake first thing in the morning.

You will probably manage to get bread flour but you can't get yeast for love or money. You'll have to join the rest of the country in making a sourdough starter.

Knotaknitter · 13/04/2020 22:04

I bought yeast last week, I had to buy 500g of it but it keeps long enough in the freezer. Ebay but really look how much they are selling you, some show the full pack but are selling 50g/100g.

dreamingofsun · 14/04/2020 11:52

bread rolls using the dough option in ours were a great success, kids begging for more. only did them as we had burgers and ran out.

were very easy to do

Castieldeansam · 14/04/2020 19:50

Can’t get bread flour? Just found recipe for plain flour bread - assuming you can get plain flour!! Haven’t tried it, but may give it a whirl.

Massivejugs · 16/04/2020 10:46

Tesco have got bread flour and yeast. Ocado now only have bread flour, no yeast (unless Ocado's availability is regional - I don't know if I only see what's available near me).
