Breadmaker

It looks like I am very late to the party but has anyone bought a breadmaker in the last few days/week?

I've checked currys, Lakeland, Amazon, ebay, AO, Argos but all sold out!

I'm not sure there will be any bread flour in the shop either...but if anyone had luck finding a machine please can you tell me where from?

Thanks!

Some of these suggestions may be out of date now, but if you’ve landed here looking for bread makers, we’ve recently updated our best bread maker page with loads of great options you can buy now that are loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Smile

panasonics are great but i've not been able to get any flour for weeks

SunnySomer · 05/04/2020 17:28

You don’t need a bread maker at all. This is a very simple recipe and only takes about 4 hours end to end. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2010/jun/10/how-to-bake-wholemeal-bread

Panasonic is amazing.
summer telling people they don’t need a bread maker when you’re unaware of their circumstances isn’t helpful. It makes people like me feel guilty. I can neither mix nor knead due to my disability.
I’m not trying to be awkward, just pointing out that it’s uncomfortable for some of us. Thank you.

Gilead · 05/04/2020 17:36

Above fot sunny apologies.

Gilead · 05/04/2020 17:36

Oh good grief, apparently I’m incapable of typing too!

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 06/04/2020 09:52

I've been thinking about buying one for a while because we all eat a lot of sliced white bread. Not looking to save money just consume less chemically stuff.

I picked the wrong time to look for one it seems!!

Can definitely recommend the Panasonic if you can manage to get hold of one. We have one and it's fab.

Farheatarse · 06/04/2020 10:01

just a warning, I bought a Panasonic bread maker a few years ago after reading a lot about how great they were. I regretted it.

I found the bread was not great, either came out rock hard or really crumbly, to the point where it was impossible to slice in to usable slices.
Half the loaf ends up with a hole in because of the paddle and it goes mouldy in a couple of days.
I found the cost of ingredients per usable slice of bread was huge. Loads of waste.
I went back to shop bought sliced, and sold the bread maker..

Thighmageddon · 06/04/2020 10:08

We've had a bread maker for about 20 years but can we find bread flour or yeast right now 🙄

Galvantula · 06/04/2020 10:46

I also love our Panasonic machine.

I'm sure I could make nice bread by hand, but I can't do it while I'm sleeping like the machine did last night :)

We've been using it every week for years, it's kind of frustrating that is so hard to get flour just now.

Galvantula · 06/04/2020 10:49

The basic bread recipe is simply flour with a little sugar, salt, butter, yeast and water.

It doesn't stay mould free as long as bought sliced bread, but we tend to make the smallest size (confusingly called medium) and the loaf rarely lasts more than a couple of days.

astropoodle · 06/04/2020 10:50

We had a Panasonic machine, i wouldn't buy one again.

SunnySomer · 06/04/2020 10:58

Gilead - my apologies for offending you, which I genuinely would never have intended to do. Clearly a bread machine is a brilliant way for anyone who has challenges such as yours to get fresh bread.
However, for those who are lucky enough not to face those challenges and do currently have lots of time at home, doing it by hand is a good way of saving the £200 or so a Panasonic would cost.

Swimslikeamole · 06/04/2020 11:28

Hi OP. I bought a Panasonic 2512 a few weeks ago. I love it. Had two ropey loaves which were to do with the yeast but since a change to freeze dried sachets it's worked perfectly. I've found flour and yeast online at Shipton Mills who have introduced a good system for orders - waiting on their delivery now. I don't have the time or patience (or knack!) for making bread by hand. It's brilliant to put this on overnight and wake up to fresh bread, and there are simply loads of recipes to choose from. I don't think I'll willingly go back to shop-bought bread. I bought my machine from John Lewis.

Whoareyoudududu · 06/04/2020 11:31

I had one a few years ago and it was naff. Quite expensive as well so hardly cheap crap. The metal spinner thing in the bottom kept getting stuck in the bread so the bread always had a big hole in the bottom Confused. Homemade bread is pretty easy without a bread maker.

Gilead · 06/04/2020 11:33

@SunnySomer, thanks for getting back to me, and so kindly too. I was really worried I'd hacked you off! Flowers

FallenMadonnawiththeBadBoobies · 06/04/2020 11:34

Another one here with a Panasonic. I've had it for a few years and, other than when I used out of date yeast, I haven't had a problem at all. The bread doesn't last as long as bought bread, but I am assuming that is because it doesn't have unnecessary preservatives in it. Our loaves don't last very long because they are yummy and they get woofed down.

OP, you could try ebay, although I would imagine many people are after them at the moment. Good luck.

SunnySomer · 06/04/2020 11:52

@Gilead ahh same to you 🙂🌷

MulticolourMophead · 06/04/2020 13:52

I had a bread maker, I ended up getting rid of it. I much prefer making by hand but I'm fortunate that I can do (I find it a good upper body workout).

My issue is getting hold of yeast, but I've now bookmarked the Shipton Mills website mentioned earlier so I plan on ordering when they release slots.

It's all about Breadmakers and disposable gloves at the minute! I was tempted to get one for about a minute but I think I'm going to concentrate on finally making a decent sourdough instead Smile

RozHuntleysStump · 06/04/2020 13:54

Only get the Panasonic!!

FizzyGreenWater · 06/04/2020 14:17

Unfortunately there couldn't be a worse time to get one - the one thing we still can't get is bread flour!

On breadmakers though: the only one you buy is the Panasonic (SD range I think). That's just the golden rule, everything else will follow!

bellinisurge · 06/04/2020 14:19

I got a Panasonic SD for our anniversary last year. And, because I'm a general prepper, I have lots of bread flour and yeast.
A breadmaker is bloody brilliant.

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 06/04/2020 14:49

Can't a kenwood cake mixing machine with a dough hook also mix the bread?

astropoodle · 06/04/2020 14:52

Yes, I used ours to do that the other day.
