Around the £50 mark?

I know zero about wine, this is on their 'wish' list of wines. Prices seem to range from £20-£££££

Thank you

Have a look at the wine society for names, they only buy good stuff, domaine du vieux telegraphe is a good one; they are shut at the moment, you might be able to get from Berry Brothers or Lay and Wheeler instead.

I needed a laugh.

For goodness sake folks we are allowed to enjoy things at the moment; don’t have to all wear hair shirts and talk only of fear, anxiety and coronavirus surely?? Birthdays still happen! Life still goes on 🙂

Pretty much any Chateauneuf du Pape for £50 will be good. Avoid anything under £30 for sure. Try to go for Premiere (or 1eme) Cru. Anything by Beaucastel or Clos de Pape is good.

Best vintage years are 2016, 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2001, 2000

Don't use the supermarkets as most of their stuff is substandard. Try to use a good vintner

Why are we popcorning? Birthdays go on. Life goes on. £50 not an unreasonable amount to spend on a birthday of someone very close to me.

life bloody goes on.

It’s actually so unhealthy to just focus on lockdown etc. I am actively trying to focus on the enjoyable things in life; otherwise I will go completely crazy. I like wine and was happy to see this thread!

Looks like the Corona martyrs arrived early!

Good God some of the responses!

I'm not a total wine novice and agree that £50 should buy a good drop. Thanks to the far more knowledgeable @nakedavengerreturns for the interesting post.

Cadnams do some good Rhône wines. There are alternatives that are better value to the rather cliched CPDN. Try their Paul Avril et fils.

If it makes the corona lot feel any better, Birthday man works for the NHS!
