No red book for baby

I had my first baby last Saturday. But I've not been given a red book for her. I've been to two appointments at the Children's centre since. Both times the midwives have expressed surprise that I don't have one, yet didn't give me one. I've just been reading about them online and I realise they are really important. How am I supposed to get one if the won't give me one? Please be kind when replying I'm really suffering from the baby blues right now. I'm sat here feeding my little one feeling very teary that she has potentially missed out on this important thing.

My health visitor gave me mine, not sure if it’s something midwives give out ☺️

Whitelisbon · 04/04/2020 00:54

I got all of mine from the health visitor on her first visit.
Please dont panic, I have 5 red books sitting in a drawer that nobody has looked at for a loooooong time. The health visitor uses it to record weight, length, etc, but that's all stored elsewhere too, so it's really not all that important anymore.

Congratulation on your baby! ❤️

Have you asked your health visitor? I’d be really surprised if you can’t get one. For now though, please don’t stress yourself out over it. All that matters is that your baby is fed and looked after and that you are ok. The baby blues will pass, they’re really horrible though. It’s all very overwhelming, especially at the moment.

Your Health Visitor will give you one surely, don't worry.
Congratulations on your baby, cuddle her extra tight..baby blues are the pits, but it will pass.

Thanks for your replies. They have all helped put things in perspective a bit. I know some thing like this wouldn't usually bother me, but I'm just feeling everything a bit more right now

Ask for one from your HV - many provide it in time for the first immunisations

I has my second baby earlier this year. With my first everything was put in the red book. With this one, the dr at my mum and baby check told me most of it is recorded electronically now and only the health visitor really uses it for weights. Please dont worry, I'm sure you will get one soon.

MoonAndMe19 · 04/04/2020 01:16

I'm sure you get the red book from the health visitor. First visit from them should be roughly when baby is about 2weeks old, ime.

notangelinajolie · 04/04/2020 01:27

Congrats on your new baby.

Don't worry you don't really need a red book. I had 3 red books along the way but I have absolutely no idea what happened to them. Just keep your own records as I'm sure you will and for reference your GP will hold all the medical information should you or your child need it in the future.

I'll have to remember to ask about the Health visitor at my next appointment with the midwife. They discharge me on Tuesday. All the midwife home visits took place at the Children's centre because of the Coronavirus, so I assume the Health visitor ones will too.

Mine (under two trusts) were both given by the midwife at birth - even when they forgot the postnatal notes. It contains the date/time for registering the birth and (crucially) the nhs number. I would try and get it sorted before discharge.

caffeinefix · 04/04/2020 01:46

I'm a HV. Normally they are given in hospital, but it's not unusual for me to give one out at the birth visit. Don't worry about it - you'll get one. Congratulations on your baby Smile
