Aaargh THE ITCHING EYES!!! Anyone else got hayfever?

I posted about this recently because I suspected my new puppy of giving me allergy symptoms, but OMFG the itching burning eyes!! They're driving me mental.

I have no idea if it's the puppy or tree pollen or what, as I've never had any allergy like this in my life - I'm 47, I've never suffered with hayfever and I had a dog previously for 12 years with no problems. It started out as one slightly itchy eye, a constantly runny nose, itching in my mouth, and dry itchy skin on my face and belly (actually a slightly bumpy rash). Now I have all of that, but I just want to claw both eyes out with the itching. It won't stop!

I have antihistamines but they are in a distant cupboard, and if I move now I'm going to wake the puppy down beside me - the little fucker has only just gone off to sleep after what seems like hours of overtired biteyness. While I summon up the energy to face disturbing the sabre-toothed knobhead, if it's tree pollen why is it bothering me most indoors, at night, with the windows closed? Is that a thing? I know nothing about hayfever.

Thanks for the warning. I'll start taking my pills from today.

Mysterian · 03/04/2020 22:55

Sounds like an allergy to something.

Iamthewombat · 03/04/2020 22:56

This is the start of tree pollen season. Bloody ash pollen!

My eyes and nose were awful a week ago. I've started taking tablets and my steroid nasal spray now

MortyFide · 03/04/2020 22:59

Glad to be of service...is this when it usually starts then? I thought the common denominator was le pooch, but maybe it is the trees. Maybe le pooch is bringing pollen indoors from outside - he did have a little run in the overgrown playing field behind our house earlier. Even though I've never had any trouble before?

Apparently the tree pollen is air bourne and settles on our pillows then gets in our eyes and can be improved by pulling a sheet up over them.

MortyFide · 03/04/2020 23:07

Ooh, interesting. And...there is an ash tree in our front garden. But we've lived here for 3 years and it's never affected me before! The only "new" thing is the dog, a different breed to my last one (RIP my darling gremlin).

My hayfever has come on really early and is the worst it's been in years. I think it's because we suddenly had a spell of good weather after months of rain, so all the trees, plants and flowers came out at once.

LightNC · 03/04/2020 23:26

Hay fever can start or restart at about this age....and your puppy could well be bringing in pollen. The NHS advice is rather draconian, but suggests we shower, hair included, after being outside; change clothes; no pets in the house etc...I wonder how many really follow that advice.

On the other hand if you’re newly allergic to pollen you could well find you’re now allergic to other things - houseplants, dust mites, you name it. The itchy skin sounds like a royal pain, and I’m not sure how typical that is with hay fever really.

Anyway I’d dig out the antihistamine as soon as you can! Pick up some eye drops soon as well, you need to take care of your eyes. Hope you get some sleep.

allinit2gether · 03/04/2020 23:33

Covid maybe?

MortyFide · 03/04/2020 23:40

Thanks guys...and LightNC for the advice! The itchy skin is very mild, I'd say the eyes and nose and occasional sneezing are the most obvious things.

I very much doubt common allergic rhinitis symptoms are linked with Covid-19, especially if we are in the middle of an unusually high tree pollen explosion as well as a pandemic. All the scaremongering and stupid media headlines will have us thinking a spot on your arse is a sign of it next.

I've noticed itchy eyes recently. I've been taking anti--histamine all winter for other itching but have just cut down as I can't get Loratadine anywhere

TreacherousPissFlap · 04/04/2020 00:05

The only plus side of not being able to leave the house is that I am not suffering from hay fever yet #everycloud

lilgreen · 04/04/2020 00:08

I’ve got it. I’m 49 and it only started in my 30s and only in Spring-tree pollen. The itchy eyes and ears are really annoying but once a day cetrizine sorts the worst of it out.

lilgreen · 04/04/2020 00:10

Also, spending time at home and in the garden when I’d usual be at work!

MortyFide · 04/04/2020 03:11

I had earache briefly yesterday, but I'm dreading itchy ear-pipes!

Sleep was a welcome relief from the itchy eyes, but puppy just woke me up for a wee - my eyelashes are all glued together and the lids are so sore. And now I'm awake and they're itching again, I can't rub them as they hurt so much. I did, however, get the Clarityn out of the cupboard - that's loratidine I think? They had a massive basket of them in our Asda the other day oldraver.

I hope it works.

I have Tree Pollen Hayfever. It's an annoying, wet, snotty, nightmare. CV19 doesnt get a chance to settle before it's snotted out and thrown away.Grin

lilgreen · 04/04/2020 07:45

Be careful with your eyes op. For the last 2 years I’ve ended up with eye infections from the scratching. Take the antihistamines daily to avoid too much scratching.

Angelnix · 04/04/2020 07:51

I've been suffering for the last month or so, it definitely seemed earlier this year. Started antihistamines by taking them just in the morning, but think I'm going to have to take something in the evening aswell as I'm waking up coughing and sneezing with my eyes glued shut! Need to get a nasal spray again aswell, forgot last time I went to the pharmacy!

Deathraystare · 04/04/2020 08:00

Yes, but not as bad as some years. I am frightened to sneeze though or cough!!! My eyes aren't too bad but the cleanser I used - a cheapie Boots one unperfumed especially for the eye area did not help so had to sling it out. It stung!!!

MortyFide · 04/04/2020 09:36

I've ordered a nasal spray and some eye mist. I look terrible this morning, my left eye is bloodshot and has a swelling under it, and the skin around both of them is dry and flaky.

I took an antihistamine at 3am, it's taken the edge off the itching I suppose but they're still sore and watery. The runny nose is moderate but I have a tickly throat now too.

I just don't get it, I know I keep saying the same thing and pp's have said it can start at any time, but how can I have gone my whole life without hayfever and it suddenly materialise like this?! My DM and DB suffered terribly with it in the past, but me, never.

This is payback isn't it, for all the times they were sneezing uncontrollably and hiding behind sunglasses while I hadn't a care in the world in the spring and summer!

I got it for the first time in my thirties as well. What a swizz! Curse those trees!

MortyFide · 04/04/2020 09:50

I'm 47, I must be late to the party!

Ive had it for abiht a month. Bad eyes and my usual hayfever cough...that's fun at the moment!!

LightNC · 04/04/2020 10:17

Ooh the eyelids glued together are not good, especially if painful too....can you phone an optician and make an appointment? I know we are on lockdown but this is a medical thing. Best not to take chances, an optician ought to check you over
