Aaargh THE ITCHING EYES!!! Anyone else got hayfever?

I posted about this recently because I suspected my new puppy of giving me allergy symptoms, but OMFG the itching burning eyes!! They're driving me mental.

I have no idea if it's the puppy or tree pollen or what, as I've never had any allergy like this in my life - I'm 47, I've never suffered with hayfever and I had a dog previously for 12 years with no problems. It started out as one slightly itchy eye, a constantly runny nose, itching in my mouth, and dry itchy skin on my face and belly (actually a slightly bumpy rash). Now I have all of that, but I just want to claw both eyes out with the itching. It won't stop!

I have antihistamines but they are in a distant cupboard, and if I move now I'm going to wake the puppy down beside me - the little fucker has only just gone off to sleep after what seems like hours of overtired biteyness. While I summon up the energy to face disturbing the sabre-toothed knobhead, if it's tree pollen why is it bothering me most indoors, at night, with the windows closed? Is that a thing? I know nothing about hayfever.

OH will have a look in Asda when he goes on Monday.

I usually buy 6 months worth at a time as we both (on GP's orders) take a double dose. Amazon and our usual supplies are out of stock though looked this morning and Clarityn is back in.

I once tried Cetirzene and I was like a zombie

Oldraver · 04/04/2020 10:28

Has anyone had any joy with the nasal prongs ?

Greenpop21 · 04/04/2020 10:36

You can see a pharmacist about your eyes. They’ll tell you if they’re infected or not and give you the right drops. No need to see an optician.

One a day cetirizine is non drowsy.

purdypuma · 04/04/2020 12:04

Glad to hear it's not just me! Had hayfever since age of 6 but my eyes haven't been this bad for years, itchy dry & my left one constantly watering. Wearing as little eye make up as possible. Constantly trying to resist the urge to run my eyes & a dry cough intermittently which Is fun when out in public at the moment. Got asked on the phone by a customer service advisor yesterday if I was alright, was almost embarrassed having to explain. But seriously, people who don't have it sometimes underestimate how badly hayfever can affect people.

MortyFide · 04/04/2020 15:53

Yeah I sneezed in the garden earlier and worried that my neighbour heard me!

Can you take 2 Clarityn (loratadine) a day then? It definitely improved during today, I haven't scratched at my eyes much at all and the runny nose has been less than average - but I'm just getting itchy again now (22 hours after I took one tablet). Packet just says one a day?

I find loratatine not enough and as effective as crterizine sad o took 1 am other pm then went to Gp and hot fexofenifine which is better for me although take cetrixine as well on really bad days... tree and grass so this til September... however although the tree seems bad this year it is possible dog is trigger

Greenpop21 · 04/04/2020 16:39

@purdypuma that streaming eye sounds familiar. I had it the last two years during hay fever season and I thought it was an infection until a pharmacist suggested I had dry eye! I was a bit Hmm but he explained that the eye will keep producing tears as it registers that the oily film needs replacing due to the constant watering, so it’s never ending. My skin around my eye was getting sore from wiping it. He sold me some synthetic tears and it stopped that night. The eye registers that the eye surface is moisturised and stops production of too many tears. The relief was amazing. I went back the next day to thank him.Something to bear in mind if it continues.

Greenpop21 · 04/04/2020 16:40

@MortyFide follow the packet unless you’re told differently by a doctor .

MortyFide · 04/04/2020 16:49

Makes sense @Greenpop21! I wouldn't normally mess with the dosage of anything, someone just mentioned double dosing so I was curious. But I take lots of other medication so I'd always check first.

I suspect a pharmacist could help, but oddly where I live, the GP receptionists are delightful but the women working at the pharmacy are terrifying! Shock I think they have been chosen for their inability to crack their face or look even slightly friendly.

Oh Thank God my people!

My eyes are itching like mad! Thought it was the blinking farm cat!

Never had hayfever... Early 40s here 🙄🙄

DearTeddyRobinson · 04/04/2020 17:32

Ah hello fellow sufferers. When mine was really bad last year I combined loratidine and ceterizine, plus Pirinase nasal spray, but the real game changer was fenoxfenadine which is prescription only. I would recommend you try and see your GP, I know it's a nightmare these days but you are suffering.

DearTeddyRobinson · 04/04/2020 17:32

Ps I never suffered till I was in my 20s

MortyFide · 04/04/2020 17:44

Hmm might attempt telephone consult next week!

Made eyes worse by washing hair this morning. Always get shampoo in my eyes...and mouth! it does not taste nice!!

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 04/04/2020 18:58

My hay fever is terrible at the moment. If I could stick a knitting needle up my nose to scratch the itch, I would! It is really exhausting.

I find cetirazine takes a few days to work but also that in the meantime ibuprofen has a slight effect; I’m still sneezing but not so inflamed around the eyes. Everyone has my sympathy - it’s so bad this year!

jelly79 · 04/04/2020 19:28

Yes and it's been driving me mad! Feel like I've had a cold for 2 weeks! Took a tablet an hour ago and feel great! Need to take it every morning!

Livpool · 04/04/2020 19:32

Ugh yes I am struggling

Oldraver · 04/04/2020 22:02

OP. My GP said I can double dose but that would be something you would need to ask them about

justasking111 · 04/04/2020 22:11

Hayfever, slight asthma, apparently one of the joys of the older woman I was told. Some people take meds all the year round who have pets because the little darlings bring the pollen in from their walks.

If it is bad you can get a prescription from docs. Telfast I think.

I take mine in the morning, the following morning I am sniffing, coughing, eyes watering. With this lockdown I do not dare go to the shops until the antihistamine has kicked in.

Greenpop21 · 05/04/2020 08:30

Yes mine is worse since I got a dog. Just having to walk among trees in the day. I’m thankful it only lasts a monthish for me.

MortyFide · 05/04/2020 08:53

Hmm I've also just started HRT - could hormonal changes trigger an allergy from nowhere too then?

The human body is so bizarre. Taken my lone dose of Clarityn this morning, the itchy eyes have eased slightly. Long may it last - need to brave a puppy walk soon. If he can be arsed, he doesn't seem to enjoy it much.

Deathraystare · 05/04/2020 09:03

I have taken to putting dabs of Vick up my nose - it helps with the itching plus I am hoping it has super powers against CV!! No I don't think so really!

I have to remember to check as a few times I have gone to the loo and seen white blobs sticking out my nose!!!

sadforthekoalas · 05/04/2020 09:15

My hay fever has been terrible this year but I'm now thinking it's maybe because I'm at home 24/7 whereas normally I'd be at work a lot of the time

MortyFide · 05/04/2020 09:20

Ooh Vicks is a good shout. Although I hopefully have a delivery of nasal spray and eye mist coming today.

I'm indoors with the puppy and my nose is running and I'm a bit sneezy, but the eyes have relented slightly after the loratadine.
