Didn't know where to put this thread, so sorry of chat is the wrong place.

I'm after some software that will allow me to draw on the computer and crate paintings.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am completely new to it so have no idea where to start.

Don't bother paying for anything until you've tried some free software and grasped the basics. You need to learn how to make a selection, use the paint bucket and brushes, resize, crop, and work with layers.
Start by learning how to make basic edits using Microsoft Paint, its free and its right there on your machine.

The Gimp is free but has a steeper learning curve than Photoshop imo.

Microsoft Paint is much more user friendly and similar to Photoshop in the layout.

There's a user forum you can join for both the gimp and Paintdotnet.

There's also GimpShop which I haven't tried yet.

Inkscape is a free vector drawing tool, its very powerful, and has a good user forum.

Artrage is from $60, depending on which version you get. You can open a photo and turn it into a painting, or paint from scratch.

I'll second paint.net. I've been using it for years and find it really easy to use and there is great support online for it.

Procreate on mac, clipstudio on pc & mac - both have trial periods and masses of online tutorials - ideally you'd want a graphics tablet - (photos hop is just not worth the extra cost over clip studio) . Autodesk sketchbook is now free and whilst not as capable as the other two it's far superior to the ms paint and equivalents.

Any of these on 2018 ipad or later, with apple pencil are as good as a graphics tablet for relatively small pictures - and getting to understand brushes, clipping and layers - fundamental to all digital painting.

Plenty of options then, thanks all, that gives me lots to delve into. Much appreciated.
