Payment of £70 gone out of my bank

Noticed a payment had gone out of my bank for £70 via paypal.

After googling I have found out that this payment went to Honk Kong for an e cig, plus £10 for postage. They are claiming to be based in the UK with a London address, a Birmingham phone number which is never answered, and a Honk Kong shipping address. Also found their facebook page and all the reviews say the same thing.. beware scam, never recieved product etc.

I do not smoke, and I have never had or wanted an ecig, I did not make this payment so I opened a dispute via paypal to say I did not order it, the thing is its coming to my address. I am genuinely confused as like I said I don't even smoke and would have zero need for an ecig.

I have had my paypal account for years but never used it as I never had a need to so this is the only transaction on my account.

Anyone with experience of paypal, am I likely to get a refund under these circumstances? if not can I go to my bank for help or will they tell me to go back to paypal?

PayPal normally find in favour of the “buyer” they once refunded me £3k in private schools fees a retainer than was allegedly fully refundable if we cancelled the school place within a certain time frame.

Change your PayPal account password ASAP.

lottieloop · 01/04/2020 12:07

I've had PayPal for 10 years & never heard of this. Obviously your PayPal has been hacked. Change your password NOW op!

NewYearNewTwatName · 01/04/2020 12:08

I don't know the full background or even if you use it, but there was a big whooo haaa on FB yesterday, about an app called house party, (let's you video call lots of friends at the same time)

Apparently it had been hacked, and the hackers had information to PayPal and Amazon accounts. people were seeing money disappear.

NewYearNewTwatName · 01/04/2020 12:15

actually what wrote about is bollocks, Yes it was all over Facebook. But it seems it was untrue.

The Houseparty thing was complete bollocks.

Change your PayPal password, and anything that is connected, as well as anything that uses the same or a similar password.

Just heard back from paypal, they said thank you for reporting this case. After reviewing your case, we found that this transaction was not unauthorised and therefore isn't eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection.

Suppose I am getting an ecig from Hong Kong then. So far I have tried phoning the Birmingham number and it just rings for ages then a recorded message of someone talking in chinese, tried emailing and had no response, also tried phoning my bank and no matter which option i press it hangs up after playing a message about the virus.

Password on paypal has been changed, thanks everyone.

You don't have a teen or partner in your house that might have used your account?

jwtbhfo · 03/04/2020 12:11

No, I am single with no kids and live alone, I also don't know anyone who uses an ecig. Even if it does show up I wouldn't be able to sell it on to get my money back as this person has charged so much for it, you can buy them for £20 in town near me for the same model that i apparently ordered.

Get back onto paypal and tell them it definitely WAS unauthorised as it is your account and you didn't authorise it.

Pelleas · 03/04/2020 12:13

Contact your bank and explain that you have got nowhere with Paypal.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 03/04/2020 12:14

Raise a complaint with paypal, how are they saying it was authorised,? By who? Use password manager kije Last Pass, much safer

lottieloop · 03/04/2020 12:44

Stand your ground OP! I would be furious & I wouldn't put the phone down until it's been resolved.

Walkthedinosauuuuur · 03/04/2020 12:46

Honk Kong 😂

KaronAVyrus · 03/04/2020 12:47

Just go straight to your bank. They’ll do the dirty work for you.

okiedokieme · 03/04/2020 14:14

This has happened to my dd, she deleted her PayPal account in the end because every time she changed her password it happened again. She had it via amazon once too - again something she would never want.

jwtbhfo · 03/04/2020 20:19

Walkthedinosauuuuur just noticed my spelling mistake now, can't stop laughing, on hold with the bank at the moment so hope I can stop giggling.
