Are people hoarding it? It’s been 4 weeks since I’ve managed to get any

Ideally bread flour but I’d settle for plain

I tried doves farm direct but they say they’ve been so busy they have stopped selling to public too

I have some spare in suffolk if anyone is local

Shockers · 02/04/2020 18:47

Booths has its own brand flour back in today. I’ve just made a stonking lemon drizzle.

Every time I see this thread title, I burst into song... 💐

joesev · 02/04/2020 18:59

csigeek honestly, I think there'll be an awful lot festering for a couple of years then being chucked out.

Panic buying and hoarding = massive food waste. ☹

joesev · 02/04/2020 19:00

Shockers out of interest, to the tune of?

Mary54 · 02/04/2020 19:02

Having made my own bread and pizza bases etc for 30+ years, I just assumed flour and yeast were things that were always there. Now very pleased that I usually keep at least one large bag in reserve. We had two weeks without bread flour in the shops but now it’s back, the yeast has disappeared. Found myself making sourdough bread yesterday for the first time to eke out the yeast. Will test it as an alternative pizza base tomorrow

480Widdio · 02/04/2020 19:07

I got two lots of Bread flour yesterday from Waitrose, their own brand.

Divebar · 02/04/2020 19:17

I’ve bought pasta flour and plain flour from Sainsbury’s over the last 2 weeks. If your local supermarket has a bakery or you have an independent bakery nearby they will often sell a bag of fresh yeast to you. ( often bread recipes have options for both varieties of yeast). Alternatively try a soda bread... Jamie Oliver does a nice recipe with porridge oats, rye flour and yoghurt. No doubt you could exchange the rye flour for a different variety if you have it. Generally I find the white flour sells out first so if you’re adventurous you can often pick up alternatives like buckwheat flour when everything else has sold out.

Aldi has loads round here only supermarket that has any. Where I am anyway

Catwaving · 02/04/2020 19:33

I have, and use, flour I've had for years and year

I really hope people don't fall for 'use by' dates and waste it

Scorpio75kaz · 02/04/2020 19:47

We’ve got flour. Can’t get yeast for love nor money 🙈😫

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/04/2020 20:03

We got flour and yeast today. I ordered a standard bag of strong flour and got a much larger one so I'm very happy. My husband will have mastered bread soon.

SilverOtter · 02/04/2020 20:08

I was so pleased to find a jumbo bag of plain flour this morning in my local farm shop! The local supermarkets don't have any whatsoever.

I do normally bake weekly but we have been doing more baking than normal because we're cooped up and the children love it.

greathat · 02/04/2020 20:21

I've got flour but no yeast!

ForestYeti · 02/04/2020 20:23

Judging by the number of threads asking about how to make Yorkshire puddings over the last few days, I reckon that a lot of people have a lot of stockpiled flour cluttering up their cupboards. And they don't really know what to do with it.

Glittertwins · 02/04/2020 20:25

Not been able to get any for weeks now. Got plenty of sausages to make toad in the hole and even eggs now but no damn flour!!!

TheEndIsBillNighy · 02/04/2020 20:28

We’ve been fortunate enough to find both bread and plain flour (in Waitrose only), but cannot find self-raising, and it’s this is usually bake with most. Hoping to find some soon.

Duckchick · 02/04/2020 20:30

@NemophilistRebel you can eek out your yeast by making a poolish or a biga, see e.g. here www.sourdoughandolives.com/recipe/baking-with-poolish/ which only uses 0.5 g of yeast for a loaf.

Alternatively, you can just use less yeast and leave it longer, like this recipe recipes.oregonlive.com/recipes/the-saturday-white-bread . It uses 2g of yeast for a 500g loaf, so still eeks it out quite a bit further.

mumme111 · 02/04/2020 20:34

Managed to buy a bag in aldi they had quite a few for a weekend I was shocked but still only bought 1 bag x

AngusThermopyle · 02/04/2020 20:35

For anyone interested,
Lakeland online has some limited supples of organic strong wholemeal flour and a couple of choices of gluten free bread mix if you scroll down and search.
Unfortunately no yeast.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:36

Im going to try make bread minus the bread flour. I have sr flour and yeast but will i need the yeast if its sr flour? I have a bread maker and also a mixer with a dough hook, what way do mners prefer making bread by?

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/04/2020 20:41

Got some bread flour a few weeks ago but no yeast anywhere. Got some plain and self raising from aldi but no vanilla essence at all.
