kindle or kindle paper white?

Just finished my last book. Thinking of going over to the dark side of e-readers. So, which is best? Is it worth stepping away from Amazon? Really need a good supply of books right now.

they both have front lights which to me is the most important consideration so after that it’s down to budget.

I travel a lot so have the paper white with 3G so I can download books when I’m travelling. If you are planning on using it at home than WiFi only will be just fine

I have been grateful for my Kindle(s) many times over the last 10 years but never more so than now. Lockdown with unlimited reading is infinitely more bearable than the prospect of lockdown without!

I would choose the Paperwhite out of the two. The backlight is very useful, plus it is good to be able to turn the page with just a sweep of the finger. The Paperwhite has a more flush front and is waterproof.

If you read in the sun then the paperwhite is much better.
No glare.
I was such a book person.
I did not want a kindle.
It's the best bloody thing ever!!!!

I'd definitely go for the Paperwhite if you can afford it. I've got one and the kids have got normal ones and mine is much nicer to read. Plus I can read in the dark with it and not annoy my DH!

I think the new non paper white kindle now has the backlight and is like the old paperwhite?

BarbaraofSeville · 31/03/2020 14:04

Yes, the latest basic kindle now has a front light and I saw a post on here from someone who said it was almost indistinguishable from a paperwhite.

The main difference appears to be the paperwhite is waterproof, so I'd only go for that one if you're a bath, spa or pool reader, otherwise the cheapest one will probably be fine. I notice that they're only £50 on Amazon right now.

You could spend the money saved on lots more books for it.

Unless you're dead set on a Kindle, I'd also look at Kobo. I love mine and wouldn't go back to a Kindle. With a Kindle you are restricted to Amazon, both a good and bad thing.

With a Kobo, the Kobo book store is arguably not as good. But a Kobo will let you load up any open source digital books. So you can't download from Amazon, but can from pretty much any other ebook store/site.

But for me the biggest plus with a Kobo is that I can download ebooks from my library straight onto my Kobo, as the most recent models have Overdrive installed. If your library uses BorrowBox instead, then these can be downloaded and transfered into a Kobo via the computer. As far as I am aware, Kindle can't do this.

Paper white!

Goingfarawsy · 31/03/2020 14:10

Paper white. I’ve had both and hated the others. Was like reading in your phone with terrible glare for holidays / outside. Get a paper white with an added lamp

DustyOwl · 31/03/2020 19:52

Thank you for all the advice. I'm terrible at making decisions so I'm going to draw up a for/against...can you tell I have time on my hands (or I'm avoiding my children.) I'm on the beach a lot but I'm not really going to get the kindle wet and I do like the idea of more money for books. I also quite like the idea of moving away from Amazon though. Hmmm, I will have a think. Thank MN hive mind.

I got the non paperwhite one last year and it’s fab. I also have an old keyboard style one. So with my new one the screen is better and I can read at night.

MrsT1405 · 31/03/2020 21:32

Definitely the paper white. It's great in sunlight. Also join Bookbub. You set your preferences and get a email every day with suggestions . Some free some 99p . Well worth it

I have a paperwhite it is awesome. For Christmas I ummed and ahhed for ages which to get for ds. But the new 'cheap' kindle is really good. If I were to get a new.one I would no longer spend extra on a paperwhite.
