Anyone else heard that this has been hacked giving access to bank details amongst other things.

Ive heard this too. Ive deleted the app and asked for my account to be deleted

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 30/03/2020 17:09

We were told to delete the account first and then the app, I've managed but it keeps blocking DH and his phone is getting hot!

I hadn't heard about this so I just Googled it. I cNt find anything about hackers bring able to access bank details or anything like that only that randoms can join your party if you don't lock it?

Are these actual reports or just people spreading rumours?
I've just got this hoping to speak to my friends.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 30/03/2020 17:55

We just got it yesterday, DS said it was "all over the internet" that it was hacked.
So we just deleted.
Could easily just be a joke but can always rejoin when things are clarified.

How would it have your bank details?

FelicityBeedle · 30/03/2020 17:56

I don’t have any bank details in Houseparty? Where do you need to put in payment details?

ChainsawBear · 30/03/2020 18:01

There is no evidence of this. It seems that somebody who didn't actually understand the (fairly standard) permissions data took a look at it, had a paranoid freakout, and it turned into Chinese whispers from there.

Like many apps, you may want to manage your security settings and data permissions on it. www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2020/03/23/houseparty-is-the-hit-coronavirus-lockdown-app-safe/amp/

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/03/2020 18:01

How would it access your bank? It isn't linked to your banking app.

WorraLiberty · 30/03/2020 18:02

The app creators are denying it www.thesun.co.uk/tech/11288862/houseparty-app-hacked-stealing-money-breach/Here

BIWI · 30/03/2020 18:03

Nothing on Snopes about this either

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 30/03/2020 18:06

We got a warning email from school about this app. Hoping you can read this if you ooh in.

This looks like an unverified rumour on Twitter that’s gone wild... nobody has shared any evidence of anything suspect at all.

There’s no problem coming off it, but it shouldn’t have your bank details, and I’d be cautious about spreading this unverified and scaring people who are already feeling the pressure.

That's nothing to do with stealing or hacking though, just standard precautions a patent should take on a social app that includes video.

ChainsawBear · 30/03/2020 18:18

*parent not patent. Shut up autocorrect.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 31/03/2020 00:32

Sorry, I might have over reacted and so might usually sensible and fairly tech savvy DS, sign of the times maybe.

I don't know how they'd get bank access, I suppose I assumed there was a way in to everything I have on my phone. How does anyone get into bank accounts if they haven't explicitly been given the details?

Sorry if it freaked anyone out and sorry if I was talking rubbish.

Was just on better safe than sorry mode Smile
